Sheldon Richardson going to USC

Sheldon Richardson reneges, commits to USC

BY VAHE GREGORIAN Posted: Thursday, November 11, 2010 2:41 pm

Prized Mizzou football recruit Sheldon Richardson said Thursday he has changed his commitment from MU to Southern California.

Richardson, from Gateway Tech, has spent the last two falls at College of the Sequoias in California after failing to qualify academically at Mizzou. He sat out all but two games this season with a wrist injury that he says he now has recovered from and did not require surgery.

Although Richardson attended MU's Oct. 23 win over then-BCS No. 1 Oklahoma and said "it felt like home," he committed to USC last weekend.

The main reason, he said, was his belief that USC and well-respected defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin would best prepare him for a transition to the NFL after just one season.

He said the fact USC won't be eligible for a bowl next year because of NCAA sanctions didn't bother him.

Richardson, considered a 5-star recruit out of high school, said he still plans to take other recruiting visits, most likely to Miami, California and Arizona State.

He was vague when asked whether he had told MU of his decision yet.

"Uh, back and forth. I'm going to call them later," he said. "It's kind of hard to tell them I'm not going there no more. Or I think I'm not going no more."

Asked if that meant there still was wiggle room in his decision-making, he said, "A little wiggle room."

Never seen a kid who likes being recruited as much as Richardson. He still plans to visit Cal again and one other place, forget where. Maybe Florida state?

Missouri has been on this guy since he was a sophomore, even though it knew from the beginning he likely would not qualify out of HS. The cc coach had never had a "placement" sign with someone other than his original school. Crazy.

Kid is not smart. At all. His best act score out of HS was a 14. He either completely bought HHS line of bs orgeron and kiffin slung, or he is trying to get his fifth star back. Neither would surprise me.

Miami. IIRC, his initial decision came down to Mizzou & Miami.

Best DL in the nation?.......

Sheldon Richardson, the defensive line prospect from Gateway Tech, signed with Mizzou today, the latest step in a long recruiting path.

Richardson originally committed to the Tigers out of high school in 2009 but didn't qualify academically, so he went to College of the Sequoias in Visalia, Calif.

But a month ago, Richardson told the Post-Dispatch he had changed his mind from Mizzou and was going to sign instead with USC.

However, today, the first day junior college players can sign, he went back with the Tigers.

But one other issue has yet to be officially decided, and that is if he has cleared all the NCAA academic hurdles to be eligible.

Richardson told the Columbia Tribune on Tuesday that he was still awaiting test scores from his final exams in California.

Richardson, 6-4, 290, is rated by rivals.com as the nation's No. 3 juco prospect.

Wow, awesome news.

I saw earlier this morning an article by Matter saying Sheldon commented yesterday he had a tough choice between two schools tomorrow, which obviously caught USC way off guard because they thought they had a 5 star DT locked up and ready to go next year.

Bottom line, I think Sheldon just loved the recruiting attention. Also have to tip your cap to the Mizzou staff for keeping their emotions in check and not making public comments after Sheldon switched his commitment. They played it cool and it worked.

What a beastly D-line we are going to have next year. I bet Steck is doing backflips today.
