Re: Hi Gaz

Hi SR-

Good to hear from you. We are fine & I hope you are well, too.

Heh. Like almost everything on the Planet, Geno is such a polarizing subject. Amazing to me how emotionally invested folks are in opposing opinions about a football player. I've seen political & religious conversations with less heat.

I think Smith is probably the QB prospect that is most ready for the NFL right now. But he is also the best QB in a very , VERY lean QB draft year. Whatever college QB rises to the top of the "must draft" lists always becomes larger than life. His strengths & flaws are magnified & obsessively examined. And then they are blown completely out of proportion. I think Geno Smith is the best of a lesser lot & is being hyped way out of proportion to his ability.

Had we not traded for Alex Smith, I would not have been horrified by Geno at #1. We needed a QB & it has been so long since we drafted & developed our own homegrown. But I still thought that OL or DL was more critical. I know OL in the First Round is anathema to a lot of fans, but you gotta secure the line. I think we should go for a Offensive Tackle or someone who can bring a pass rush. I know that would be chum in the water at the Planet. Blood would flow & people would disrespect my Mother.

Personally [and I know the Planet consensus would be that I am an idiot for this opinion], I think the "franchise QB" is a myth. Folks talk about Manning or Elway or Flacco winning a game all by themselves & try to rank QBs by comparing their win/loss records. QBs don't win games. Teams win games. Offense, Defense, Coaching & Luck [no pun intended]. Look at Elway before Sharpe & Davis.

So, this was a very long-winded way of saying that without the Alex Smith trade, I would have preferred an Offensive Tackle or Defensive Lineman or MAYBE a Linebacker in the First & a QB in the 2nd. If I were King, Geno Smith would not have been on my draft list. With the trade, it looks more & more likely that I am going to get what I wanted. And we'll see how good my prognosticating skills are this season.

Have fun, man.

xoxo~

Teams win games.

But QBs are the difference between good teams and championship teams.
I hear what you are saying, and understand...but I do think the whole "Franchise QB" thing is way over-blown. Hell, Doug Williams, Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, and Jim McMahon won superbowls.

Exhibit E:
Eli Manning: 2010, good-not-great QB; 2011 franchise QB, 2013 Meh QB...

It takes a lot more than a good QB to win a Superbowl, IMHO

Hey Clayton, how you doin'?

I think there is a difference between homer bullshit and legitimate analysis. Just as I think there is a difference between good stats, and garbage time stats. Or good mults, and bad mults. Heh.

The list of qbs that won the super bowl multiple times pretty much says it all.

The majority of SBs are won by franchise QBs.

Why does this undeniable fact need to beaten into true fan heads every offseason?

How about list of QBs that have won SB mutiple times = QBs who've been on good teams that won multiple SBs?

See above. With your idea of "fact"....you should write for a political journal, or some erotic literature website.

I love the "Teams win championships" strawman.

Gaz? To care about Gaz' opinion at this point is to live as much in the past as Gaz' football opinions do.

How many "Franchise QBs" have taken a different team to the SB?

How many of them have taken the same team, but with a markedly different line-up to the SB....in the last 25-30 years?

The 80s 49ers probably only win 2 SBs, if that, without Joe Montana.

They don't win the 1981 Super Bowl or the 1988 Super Bowl without Joe.

Sure! The 49ers would still have their dynasty without Montana, the Patriots without Brady, the cowboys without Aikman and Staubach, the Steelers without Roethlisberger and Bradshaw.

Hard to believe people still want to bet on the exceptions to the rule.

The 49ers had vastly different lineups from 1981 to 1989.

Elways 80s and 90s Broncos were completely different teams.

You're just being obtuse.

Oh, and then there's Kurt Warner taking the Rams and the ****ing Cardinals to the SB.

So please GTFO.

Brett Favre took the Packers to two SBs and at the age of damn near 40 had the Vikings one drive away.

There is no substitution for a great QB, ever.

GTFO true fans.

Just ****ing die and go root for the Browns.

Oh wait, Tom Brady's first SB team was vastly different from his last two.

HJ...I'll admit, I'm playing devil's advocate a little bit on this one, because I really do think a true franchise QB can make a huge difference ... obviously. I'm just wondering how so many are absolutely convinced we need to draft Geno. Personally, I'd love to see it. Number one, at the very least it introduces competition into the QB position along with some valuable insurance. Number two, I honestly think Geno can become a good NFL QB in time. And, perhaps most importantly, number three....it would be another step in this organization restoring some credibility and trust with their fans by finally listening to them at a time when that's a pretty important step--especially given the last 5-25 years.

On the other hand, I do think the whole past history with retread backups instead of developing our own guy, along with the massive clusterfukk of the Croyle-Thigpen-Cassel-Quinn saga of the recent past, may have put some of us (me at times) into a myopic haze. In that haze, are we mistaking Geno/Tyler Wilson/Barkley/Nassib for the second coming of McNabb/Brees/Dalton/Kaepernick/Brady...when it's just as likely to be the second coming of Russell/Mirer/Claussen/TaVarias Jackson/Ted White?

I honestly don't know. However, in this particular draft....I'm leaning toward the latter over the former. I swear, I hope I'm wrong--especially if we do pick Geno. And if we don't, but he ends up being worthy of that first round pick...I guess I'll continue to cry myself to sleep every December for the next 5 years, again.

PS: It's good to see you around again, btw.
