It isn't riskier, its unnecessary.

You are slower when you try to slide than when you run through, and tag attempts at first are very rare. The only time a slide at first might be defensible is if the first baseman is off the base and must attempt a swipe tag.

Sliding into first when the first baseman has a foot on the bag is one of the dumbest baserunning moves in baseball, you are slower and might get hurt.

The base was open, but it's questionable whether Gordon needed to slide in that situation (Sale did attempt a feeble tag).

However, no one can argue that Gordon's effort may have ignited this team's performance this inning.
