When you've got guys in the league like Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, and Philip Rivers in the 14-15 range then you can tell Alex to go pound sand if he wants 17. |

This is one of the only things, if not the only thing, that I have not agreed with DI on this offseason. The playcalling got far too conservative and safe, which isn't on Smith, but is on Reid. I do believe a more confident, aggressive QB would have pushed harder to remain on the attack, however.

That's fine. Would rather pay a few more million and be confident in the guy that pay him $17 million and get saddled with an albatross contract for the guy we saw over the first half of the season.

Good chance that was a team packing it in on a game that didn't matter, but still happened. I do think Smith missed some opportunities in the second half of that playoff game, but I don't put all of the blame on him or anything. Three straight empty possession as Indy started its comeback is not what you want to see from your QB, but he played an excellent game overall. Just wish he had hit that pass on the wheel route...

I don't think Smith suddenly saw that light post bye week. My guess is that given the quality play of the Chiefs defense the first nine games, the relatively week offenses and 2nd string QB's we were seeing, the limited playbook the offense was working with, new offensive scheme and personnel, etc. etc., Reid and Smith adopted a more conservative game plan. Post bye week, when the playoff contending teams came up, they let go of the reins, put in a more aggressive scheme, had more of the playbook to work with and Smith took more chances - knowing they were going to need to put up more points. This seems more likely to me than "Smith sucked the first 9 games, Reid talked to him and then Smith was a baller the rest of the way."

Eye test matches. Alex Smith was far more aggressive throwing the ball into windows and down the field after the bye week. It's more believable to me that he was encouraged to do those things rather than just laying back and not turning on the switch early.

From the 2nd half kickoff to the lead lost with under 5 min to go. COLTS scored 5 TDs in 10 minutes and 18 seconds of possession. 1 point every 17.7 seconds they had the ball. That is 100 points a game pace. The Colts had only 2 3rd downs over the entire 2nd half surge to victory. |

Anyone putting all the blame on the defense for the loss against Indy in the playoffs and none on the offense is out of their damn mind.
How many points did the Chiefs score in the 2nd half? 13. 3 of those points are directly attributed to the defense because they forced a turnover deep in Indy territory and the offense only managed to get like 7 yards. The only touchdown the Chiefs scored in the second half came off another turnover leaving the offense with an 18 yard field. The last 3 came on the only sustained drive for the Chiefs in the entire half and we only managed to get a FG. The whole team failed in the 2nd half. The defense couldn't be bothered to get a stop in the last 27 or so minutes and the offense couldnt be bothered to keep the Colts offense on the bench. There aren't really two options here. There's pretty much only one. They have to pay him. That's the situation the forced themselves into when they traded for him. While they may draft a QB, there's no real way they can go into the draft looking for a starter, not at 23. They can hope that they get extraordinarily lucky and someone that they love drops, but the reality is that they can't count on the availability of anybody close to ready to go, not that late in the round. And they don't have any ammunition to make a significant move up.

Alex has mostly been in run first offenses. Last year we were a pass first team but his numbers were very average...
