PFT: Unhappy with Chiefs, Houston hopes to attract an offer sheet

Quote:
Mike Florio, ProFootballTalk

It’s highly unusual for franchise players to be signed to offer sheets, because teams regard any unused first-round picks as potential Hall of Fame players. Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston could become the exception, for various reasons.

First, he enters the process after completing a 22-sack season. No player with that kind of performance has been available on the heels of it, with or without compensation.

Second, he’s motivated to move on. Per multiple sources, Houston is very upset with the Chiefs. It’s believed that he’ll actively solicit an offer sheet in the hopes the Chiefs won’t match it.

Only thing that can be predicted with complete certainty is that whatever happens will cause the Chiefs to either not make or lose in the first round of the playoffs.

It happens every year, a big name signs a big contract and then become an average player.

Evidence that he just wants a paycheck: holding out rookie year

that's entirely wrong

As we've learned since the dawn of the great Peeholi era, Joe fan definitely "needs to be there" to have a good read on the situation, and internet speculation could not possibly be close to the truth.

If you're Dorsey, aren't you pretty much obligated to take that deal?
Why would Dorsey give up a first roud pick to any team if he doesn't have to? If a team wants Houston they can meet the terms, if they don't meet the terms then we keep Houston. I don't see how Dorsey would be obligated to change the terms of the offer sheet.

In theory - but you dont know what you're gonna get. You do know what you have in Houston.

Reasonable or not, we may expect a player to be "upset" because a team isn't proposing a contract he feels he is worth, or has earned.

The player is supposed to ask for more than he is worth.

The team is supposed to ask for what is less or what is reasonable, and then they negotiate. Or they'll always be fielding sucky teams or having trouble with cap space.

"Reasonable" can also have to do with trying to sign enough players to have a competitive team within the salary cap restraints. If a player can't figure that out, let him go and start his own team.

Hmmm.

We would be moving up 10 spots in the draft, which could get us one of the top wrs, so its not fair to say we could be getting nothing.

I'd counter an offer like that.

2015 first round pick
2015 third round pick
2016 first round pick

for

Houston and our 2015 first round pick.

Eagles have Barwin who's coming off a 15 sack season, Colts still have Mathis, Browns are gonna do everything to develop mingo and try to make that Kruger deal worth it. Falcons are really the only team I could see doing it.

Since this regime has been here, they've overpaid for nearly every free agent or contract they've signed.

Yet now Houston isn't signed. Seems to say more about Houston than the front office.
