DJ and Sherman take a pay cut

@FieldYates: Source: Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson has taken a pay cut for 2017. He got a $1M signing bonus & $1M base salary, creating ~$4.25M in cap space.

http://www.espn.com/espn/now?nowId=2...130853782707-4

The full story on LB Derrick Johnson & FB Anthony Sherman's reworked contracts: The Chiefs - who were tight to the salary cap - have agreed to a major pay cut with linebacker Derrick Johnson, per league source. Johnson, who tore his Achilles last year, was due a base salary $4.75M for 2017 and up to $1M in per game roster bonuses. Under his new terms, he signed a deal with a $1M signing bonus and a $1M fully guaranteed base salary. It creates about $4.25M in cap space for the Chiefs and keeps a key leader around. The 2018 portion of his contract remains unchanged, other than the $500k proration of the new signing bonus. The Chiefs also negotiated a pay cut with FB Anthony Sherman, whose base salary was dropped from $1.55M to $1.1M (fully guaranteed). He had per-game roster bonuses of $12,500 that were dropped to $6,250, which created a total of $550,000 in cap space for Kansas City. These moves likely helped facilitate the recent signing of DT Bennie Logan.

Report: Derrick Johnson, Anthony Sherman take a pay cut

Wondering how the Kasnas City Chiefs were able to afford signing defensive lineman Bennie Logan to a one-year, $8 million deal?

Well, here’s your answer.

Per Field Yates of ESPN, Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson took a pay cut for 2017, creating $4.25 million in cap room.

Source: Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson has taken a pay cut for 2017. He got a $1M signing bonus & $1M base salary, creating ~$4.25M in cap space.

— Field Yates (@FieldYates) March 17, 2017

Also, fullback Anthony Sherman dropped his 2017 base salary from $1.55 million to $1.1 million and also dropped his roster bonuses, creating $550,000 in cap room.

Over the Cap has the Chiefs’ cap space listed at about $427,000 right now, and that’s not including Johnson and Sherman’s restructure. Adding those in, and the Chiefs should have a little over $5 million in cap space for 2017. That’s enough for the team to possibly sign another free agent (like Gerald Hodges?) and sign the new draft picks in April.

The fact that Johnson and Sherman were willing to cut their contracts shows how big of team guys these two are. There aren’t many players that are willing to just get rid of money like that. Much respect to those two.

Following this news, I’m curious to see if the Chiefs make any more moves to create cap room. Could they restructure any more contracts? Tamba Hali’s? Will they cut anyone? It’s possible if they want to sign more free agents.

i was just reading that too, lol.

Seriously. He was on the field about as often as our long snapper. If you're paying him to be a special teams guy, he needs to fill a depth position of value.
There were a few of us grousing about his playing time this year... when you're arguably the best at your position, you need to see the field a helluva lot more than he did

Andy has fallen too much in love with the spread game, put that little bulldozer out there to clear the way for your backs, get a 3rd and short here and there, and help a struggling O line pass block for ****s sake

It's not Tamba's fault Dorsey gave him such a stupid restructure. The brass knew what they were doing and were banking on Tamba retiring. Only difference is he's not planning to.

I don't blame Tamba. I blame Dorsey for this one.

Contract was done while Ford was still showing little potential and Houston recovering from knee surgery. Tamba's agent took advantage of the situation

I HIGHLY doubt this has anything to do with Tambas contract with KC.

Tamba is a straight up class act.

I hate to say it, but its time for Dorsey to draft someone that can come in and TAKE the ROLB position and make Dee Ford a situational guy while seeing how a true professional goes about his day to day stuff like Hali does.

Tamba should be playing 20% of the snaps till playoff time. Maybe less.

He absolutely should take a paycut if they ask.

Do like DJ did so they can add another guy to come in and help.

Joe only won 2 playoff games here.

IIRC, we beat the Chargers one year (the year we lost to Miami on Szott's phantom hold??), then Joe's 2 wins, then the Houston win in the 2015 season.

That's more than playoff futility. That's ****ing pathetic.

The NFL hates the Chiefs.

Not quite

1991: beat Raiders 10-6 wildcard (Deberg)
1993: beat Steelers 27-24 wildcard (Montana)
1993: beat Oilers 28-20 divisional (Montana)
2015: beat Texans 30-0 wildcard (Smith)

The loss to Miami which you are referring to wad in the 1990 wildcard. We did lose to SD in the playoffs in 1992.
