I bet it happens more often than you'd think. Mikko Rantanen is one of the Avs' players, and the official NHL pronunciation guide is "RANT-uh-nun." One of the announcers looked into the true Finnish pronunciation, which has a rolled R and is more of "ront". It was technically correct, but it just confused the hell out of everyone. Mikko himself has said that he doesn't care and would rather it just be easy for Americans to pronounce, so he's effectively adopted the "wrong" pronunciation.

Some family friends of mine have the last name Reinke. They pronounce it Rain-kee, but apparently it's of German origin and I've heard them tell me the true pronunciation is probably closer to Rhine-uh-kee.

I think you’re somewhat right. I don’t think I’m being smug though, I think I was just ignorant about him to begin with. Literally I always would call him Travis Kelce, 1 syllable. I never pronounced it Kelsey.

I’m just saying my two cents. I in no doubt feel that I probably sound like a ****ing douche on this forum, but my family doesn’t give a shit that I pronounced it right this entire time tbh so who else should I share this newly found information with haha and I never even really paid attention to the idea that one way was correct and vice versa. That being said, it sounds like I’ve been wrong anyways because him and his family pronounce it Kelsey anyways and kelce is just the formality of the true name

If I keep hearing people saying Kelsey I’ll probably pay just as much attention to the phrasing as i have done these past x amount of years.

But I do concede my posts sound like shit. I didn’t even know this was a big deal with the pronunciation of his name anyways.

This is not uncommon.

I was in my 30s before I learned how my last name was most likely pronounced. I only discovered it by visiting with an elder who went to Germany many times to explore where our family came from. To make it even more interesting, he is deep in the genealogy stuff and explored several family line leads that led him to believe the name was originally Nordic and the spelling had been slightly changed in translation, so even the German pronunciation was obviously different from the original name.
