The Richmond Times-Dispatch reached out to the chiefs of some of Virginia’s Indian tribes to gather some thoughts about the Redskins name and find out whether those tribes are offended by the name controversy that launched a thousand blog posts.

Robert Green, retired chief of the Patawomeck Tribe in Virginia, told the paper that he has no objection to the team’s name.

“It doesn’t bother me,” Green said. “About 98 percent of my tribe is Redskins fans, and it doesn’t offend them, either.”

Kevin Brown, chief of the Pamunkey Tribe of Virginia, said that his tribe generally feels the same way.

“I’m a Redskins fan, and I don’t think there’s any intention for (the nickname) to be derogatory. The majority of the people in my tribe don’t have a problem with it. There are a few who do, and we respect their feelings.”

Perhaps the most adamant on the issue was G. Anne Richardson, chief of Virginia’s Rappahannock Tribe, who may be more offended by the controversy than by the name itself.

“I don’t have an issue with it,” she said. “There are so many more issues that are important for the tribe than to waste time on what a team is called. We’re worried about real things, and I don’t consider that a real thing.

“We’re more worried about our kids being educated, our people housed, elder care and the survival of our culture. We’ve been in that survival mode for 400 years. We’re not worried about how some ball team is named.”

So, are these guys racists too? What's the Native American equivalent of "Uncle Tom"?

I won't claim to know a bunch of Native Americans, but when I was in college, a close friend was the president of the Native American Association on campus. They did tribal pow-wows and such. I hunted with his family on the Omaha Nation reservation. So, I don't have a huge sample to draw from, but I do have some knowledge of their general feelings on the matter.

Every last one of them were Redskins fans...

I didn't articulate my point very well.

I'm saying just because Native Americans choose to have affiliation and even flaunt the skins flag doesn't make it a non issue.

The inception of the name IMO is what matters. What's the intended reason the team was named the Redskins?

As I understand it was to honor the owners mother who was Sioux, so I see no reason why 80 years later PC groups can demand a change in name because they didn't do their research.

However, if they were named as a racial **** you to Native Americans, they should change the damn name.

Did you even read the polls? Do realize there is no mention of time frame or whereabouts of those surveyed in your 'recent' poll, right? They claim 400 were polled, yet the earlier poll took about a year to poll 768. Read the notes and acknowledgments - if you cannot see how obvious it is that the recent poll set out to prove a conclusion while the prior poll was an open minded poll, then you need IQ glasses.

It wasn't the war; it was the disease. About 90% of the Native population was wiped out by the disease that Europeans carried, but had no control over or even knowledge of. Europeans had landed in North America by 1000 AD, or maybe even earlier, and it only took one to infect the entire continent.
