If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.
A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.
So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way. They struggled to beat us last year with Cassel and Romeo.

I don't happen to view Alex Smith as a backup like most here do. Matt Cassel? Yes, he was a backup. So were most of the other dudes we picked up from the 49ers. Alex Smith, IMO, is a starting QB in the NFL. He is a guy that would not have been available under normal circumstances. Most coaches would have went back to their starter who was 6-2-1 after 9 games last season, and Kaepernick would have went back to the bench, once Smith would have came back. Now will Smith light it up here? That's the 10 million dollar question. And yes, I was on the Geno bandwagon. Apparently I was wrong. Alex Smith is our QB this season. I am on board. |

In 2011, Alex was a top 10 ranked QB that was a Kyle Williams fumble away from helping SF to a SB. In 2012, he helped them to a 6-2 record and ranked in the top 5 in QB passer rating when he sustained that concussion. Harbaugh saw his opportunity to get "his boy" Kaepernick in there and he took it. No doubt Kaepernick has sick abilities that few if any others have. He was planned out as the eventual starter, but got his chance early and never looked back. It wasn't a knock on Alex... he didn't lose his job to some scrub. At least try and keep it real. |

you try and keep it real
Alex has been in the league 7 years the Niners didn't dump him because he was great and they 'knew' Kapernick was better....he had only played a single game in the NFL they dumped his mediocre ass because his ceiling is game manager they dumped his ass to take a huge gamble on a guy who had played a single game in the NFL why? A--->one of them was a known factor whose ceiling is middle-ish B--->one of them is still pretty much an unknown, but with a higher possible ceiling until he becomes more known.... I'd go with option B if I was building a team, if my goal was to win a superbowl. Wouldn't you? The niners seem to agree.

To see how a good organization deals with no QB prospects in the draft does it, see Seattle Seahawks. They signed a pathetic Tavares Jackson to go through the motions while drafting superbly for the future. Next year, they found their franchise QB in the 3rd round. THAT is how it's done. You don't trade 2 2nd round picks for a placeholder QB. You build with your 2nd round picks and stay patient until a draft comes alone where you can get a franchise QB. Short term panic-thinking will screw you every time. They guys with long vision and strategy build champions. |

Face it, KC has no luck. First pick in the draft and it is the weakest QB class in god knows when. No great free agents either. The only real things to complain about are (1) compensation paid for Smith, and (b) not grabbing a qbotf earlier in the draft like NY or Philly.
To me (b) is the bigger problem because it looks like the team isn't really bringing in any competition. At least approach it like Seattle did, nothing to lose - lots to gain.

And just for the record, I am not siding with the Alex Smith trolls that have infested the board. I'm tired of them too. Ready for them to go home.
It's on record here that I did not want Cassel to QB the Chiefs last season. I wanted Kyle Orton... because I knew we couldn't get Luck or RGIII. Kyle fricking Orton. Let that soak in for a minute. I really believe last years team could have been good if he was the QB here last year. But Matt Cassel sucked the life out of last years team. I'll always believe that, and no one will change my mind. I'm looking forward to this season. I can't wait. I choose not to be negative before it starts. |

There aren't really any Alex Smith trolls. Most of the new posters who came here because they like Alex Smith have been pretty reasonable, particularly in light of the immature response they've gotten from a particular group of planeteers who desperately cling to their victimhood.

The Raiders traded for Matt Flynn giving up a 2014 5th round pick, and another late conditional round in 2015.
If Matt Flynn pans out for them, you guys are going to be crying in your soup or putting holes in your walls. One or the other. I kind of doubt a 7th round draft choice will pan out, but he is Mike McCarthy trained and held Aaron Rodgers's clipboard for 4 years. IMHO, I would much rather take a flier on Flynn for 2 late draft picks than waste 2 2nd rounders on Alex Smiff. If Flynn balls out for the Raiders, Dorsey is going to look pretty stupid. |
