Proposed 2013 Slogan: Tigers: They're what's for dinner
Actual 2013 Slogan: Come to Play
A better, more accurate, or alternative slogan: All in, no panic, we promise.

Dayton Moore has pushed all his chips in and is riding on King/Jack suited, hoping it comes together, he gets some good luck, and he hits the nuts by the river card. There's potential, oh yes, there's potential. There's also risk.

At the midway point, Dayton is left counting on the river card. The flop and turn didn't help him, and he's looking at the Tigers holding a pair of Queens and the Indians holding a pair of 9s. His 2013 plan hasn't failed - yet - but the odds are not in his favor.

Burning questions updates below.

Burning Questions for 2013:

1) Will the improve rotation be improved enough? Does James Shields pitch like a fringe No. 1 away from Tampa Bay? Does Ervin Santana pitch to his highest upside in his walk year? Can Jeremy Guthrie build on his strong performance as a Royal in 2012? Can Wade Davis bring his new mentality- and velocity - back to the rotation?

Midseason check-in: Yes, the rotation is certainly improved enough. Shields has pitched like a fringe No. 1 and Santana is having his best season. Guthrie has horrible peripherals but has continued to perform well at his home park and eat innings on the road. Davis brought neither his kick-ass mentality or improved velocity back to the rotation and is in Luke Hochevar/Hiram Davies territory.

2) When will Luke Hochevar be shown the door?
Midseason check-in: It appears, never, at this point. Hochevar has been solid in non-leverage situations, though pretty much every time he has been used with men on base in an inning, it has been a disaster.

3) Does Hosmer bounce back?
Midseason check-in: It took some time, but Hosmer's performance from June 1 on is probably the most encouraging thing about the 2013 season so far.
4) Can Moustakas hit for a whole season like he did in the first half of 2012?
Midseason check-in: Nope. Moustakas was god-awful, then great for about 3 weeks, then god-awful again. He has been better since he started working with Brett and Grafol but still has a long way to go.
5) Who regresses?
Midseason check-in: Welp, Alicides Escobar is not a surprising name here (though Yost's stubborn insistence on hitting him second is ridiculous). Billy Butler is a surprise. He isn't having a terrible year - still contributing a lot to the offense - but he's not hitting for the average or power he has displayed over the past several years.
6) Who plays 2B?
Midseason check-in: A whole bunch of people, and not that great. Gio is at least getting a shot, though he once again is not doing much with it.
7) Can Jeff Francoeur be at least replacement level, rather than epic horrible level?
Midseason check-in: Hahahahahahahahahahaha
8) Will Dayton Moore survive to see 2014?
Midseason check-in: Outlook uncertain. Probably still around, unless the team completely tanks in the second half and he does something foolish. My guess - he sacrifices Ned Yost this offseason and gets one more shot with a new manager in 2014.
9) Will Danny Duffy come back healthy? And if he does, is he the same, better or worse?
Midseason check-in: Yes. Velocity looks the same, and it looks likely he is the same guy as before.
10) And the big one: Has KC added enough to run down the big-money Detroit Tigers?
Midseason check-in: Doesn't look like it, does it?

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/07/stark-on-2.html?

ESPN's Jayson Stark begins his latest column with a look at the Biogenesis situation. As Joel Sherman of the New York Post first reported, suspension announcements are not expected today. Sherman expects the announcements to come Thursday or Friday. In Stark's opinion, the Rangers are acting like a team that knows what Nelson Cruz will do if suspended, in that their aggressive search for a bat suggests he might serve a suspension now to preserve his free agent value. Meanwhile, the Tigers' lack of pursuit of a backup plan to shortstop Jhonny Peralta suggests he'll appeal. Elsewhere in Stark's column:

The Dodgers and Angels, who haven't made a trade in 20 years, had a "mostly casual conversation" regarding Halos second baseman Howie Kendrick. There are no indications a deal is in the works.
The Angels are at least listening on infielders Kendrick, Erick Aybar, and Alberto Callaspo, and seeking high quality big league ready pitching in return.
The Cubs could move Kevin Gregg and Nate Schierholtz, but are extremely unlikely to trade lefty reliever James Russell and there's just about zero chance of a Jeff Samardzija trade.
Pitchers Ian Kennedy and J.J. Putz of the Diamondbacks and Kyle Farnsworth of the Rays "have suddenly been made available." Trading Kennedy would allow Arizona to clear around $1.4MM toward another move. Are they that hard up for cash?

The Royals were 4 games over .500 in April, 5 in June, and 3 in July so far. If we finish on average 4 games over .500 in each of the next two months that puts us at 85-77.

Last season the two wildcard teams, Baltimore and Texas finished at 93-69. Boston and Tampa are strong but it seams the other teams in front of us in the wild card this season are not nearly as strong as last season. I think the wildcard can be had for under 90 wins.

We will need to probably find 3-4 more games in the next two months above what we have done in order to have a chance. And we will definitely need to help ourselves by beating Cleveland and Detroit.

This has to be the first season in many that we have a winning record at home(so far), yes? Sometimes I feel like the K is the toughest place to play.

Royals, seeking 2B upgrade, have discussed Beckham, Kendrick
July 30, 2013 2:14 PM ET

The Royals, looking for upgrades at second base and in right field, have had discussions about Gordon Beckham of the White Sox and Howie Kendrick of the Angels, according to sources.

There was no indication Tuesday that the Royals were close on a deal for either player, or any other trade, for that matter. While they still won't completely rule out dealing starter Ervin Santana, he was still scheduled to pitch Tuesday night against the Twins as the Royals try to extend their six-game winning streak.

While the Royals would prefer not to give up on this season, their interest as a possible buyer would be in players they could control beyond 2013. Beckham and Kendrick are both under control through 2015.

A deal for either one wouldn't be simple. The Angels are now open to discussing Kendrick, but would want players (most likely pitchers) who would impact their club in 2014. And it's not clear how comfortable the White Sox would be with trading Beckham within the division.

As reported here last week, the Royals have also shown some interest in White Sox outfielder Alex Rios.

If thinking if the Sox don't mind to keep giving us their second basemen (Getz may have been a FA, don't remember), then I think we probably shouldn't make that trade, you know?

How good is Beckham, anyway? He has to be stronger at the plate then anything we have currently, but how is his defense?

Sucks. He's generating negative fielding value. His overall WAR is 0.4 vs Getz at 0.1. Waste of time.

He's really inconsistent at the plate. Hitting .302 this year, but only hit .234 and .230 the previous two years. A .250 career hitter with a .314 OBP. Has some power (14 HR per 162 games in his career). I could be wrong, but I think he's known for playing very good defense.

This has nothing to do with the Royals, but Peavy has been scratched for the Sox tonight.
