So to the question of "if no Alex, then who?" It doesn't really matter.
While Alex will never be a Brady, Manning, or Brees... he is what he is. Let's not pretend he's Matt Cassel. HE's not 'just a guy' that can be replaced with anyone off of the street as this post implies.

I'd think KC fans could appreciate that after the Croyle, Huard, Thigpen, Palko, Cassel and Brady Quinn disasters.

Thankfully, for him, the Niners traded him to a team not named Cleveland or Oakland. I don't think Smith wants to be at the mercy of the team again. A contract that says to pay him as starter or release him, IMO.

If they are offering a guarantee that is for 2-3 years worth, he absolutely should not sign. Go and earn a new contract. Chances are that contract is at least 2-3 years AFTER this year. Total money does not matter, guarantee and signing bonus matters.

Too much and it hurts his team that could help him succeed and keep his job. Too little and he's too expendable. It doesn't matter if the Chiefs paid him a lot this year and next, it helps him little. He needs years 4-6 to be sufficient.
This would be my guess as well, and it is just a guess. Trying to find a team friendly deal that also shows a reasonable level of commitment to Smith is probably a pretty complicated nut to crack.

Or he is just trying to get as much as he can get regardless of anything else. Virtually every example of how he has handled himself in his professional career would contradict this scenario, but you never know, maybe he is looking to get 1 more big contract before he hangs them up. Can't say I wouldn't do the same.

Or the Chiefs are just coming in so ridiculously low that even the team friendly deal he is offering, is to high for Dorsey. Based on what Dorsey paid for Bowe however would contradict this scenario as well.

He's not just a guy, no. But he's a guy that can be replaced with a much cheaper contract player who perhaps brings less to the table, but by having less money in the position it allows the surrounding team to be better

I thnk there are people here who would be pleased if Alex were released today and Bray named the starter.

When did this happen?

If we lose Justin Houston because we paid Alex Smith then Dorsey and Reid to be dropped off in the Missouri River with cinder blocks.

It's a negotiation. Both sides engage in gamesmanship. Much of the time these reporters are either reporting something fed to them by one side, or just pulling things out of thin air.

We were sold on the perks of Alex smith being that he's take less so the team around him can be stronger.

Apparently, that's a loa of bullshit.

So you might say that Alex's camp did exactly what they should have done, which was wait until they were negotiating from a position of strength.

Any average QB will be getting this kind of money thanks to Cutler

Then move on to another average QB on a rookie deal.

It's absolutely a load of shit to justify this by saying "cutler or romo got it". Yeah they got it and it's hurting their teams.

No team wanted him last time he was a free agent as a starter. Let him walk or take the price we give him.

If his contract demands are reasonable I'd much rather keep him around than try to budget at the QB position. I do not claim they are. I do not know. He (or his agent), as I said, have done this before... I think it goes with being a #1 overall pick. I think his agent has a skewed view of his actual value.

If he wants paid like an elite QB, the right path to go would be the one you describe. I will not ascribe the 'QB guru' label to Andy though. I think he's very smart about how he tailors an offense around his QB, but I'm not convinced QB's develop into better players. I just think he's good at hiding their weaknesses.

In the end though the best route the team can take is keeping Stop Gap Smith in there while we look for a long term answer.
