Chiefs Put 2014 OTAs In The History Book
by Bob Gretz

Maybe they went one too many OTAs.

After cruising through nine of the 10 allowable off-season practices, the Chiefs were on the field Friday for their last session. Well their bodies were on the field; their minds appeared to have already left for the weekend.

The offense that had looked so productive and efficient in previous practices produced its worst practice, with the ball frequently on the ground due to botched handoffs. The quarterbacks’ completion percentage took a nose dive, as all four of them seemed to be overthrowing the receivers.

It was obvious it was going to be a bad day when on the first offensive snap against a defense in the practice, quarterback Alex Smith threw a pass directly at safety Eric Berry, who enjoyed the pick six run for a score. Smith seldom misses that badly, so more than likely it was a route that wasn’t run correctly.

Whether Andy Reid planned to shorten the session before practice or not, he stopped things about 30 minutes early and sent the team on its way. They’ll report back for a three-day mandatory mini-camp that begins on Tuesday.

On Friday, there wasn’t much concern from the head coach after practice because it was just part of the normal ebb and flow of practice field work.

“We are getting better,” Reid said of his club’s progress over the 10 practices. “We’ve got a long way to go, but we are getting there. We are getting ourselves wrapped up in a position where when we go to training camp, we can pick up right where we left off here. We’ve got a lot installed.”

Reid’s attention now turns to the mini-camp and he revealed that tight end Travis Kelce and wide receiver Kyle Williams may get the chance to work in the three practices. Kelce is coming off micro-fracture surgery on his knee from last fall and he’s not been able to practice since. Williams was claimed on waivers last November after he was released by San Francisco, but after a week with the Chiefs he suffered a torn ACL that required surgery. Both players were on the field during practices, but did not participate in any fashion.

“We’ll see how all that works” was how Reid described the amount of on-field work for Kelce and Williams during the practices. With the NFL clock ticking towards training camp, the Chiefs don’t want to see either player have a setback from too much activity in the practice.

The coach was asked if he anticipated cornerback Brandon Flowers and outside linebacker Justin Houston to attend the mandatory mini-camp. Both players have boycotted the OTA sessions.

“I don’t know that,” Reid said. “It’s their decisions on whether they come or don’t come. Even though it’s a mandatory camp . . . we’ll see. The thing you can be guaranteed is we’ll coach whoever is here. We don’t worry about the ones that are not. We go about our business.”

Not long afterwards, the Chiefs went about their business with the release of Flowers, waiving the seven-year veteran.

OTA #10 notes and news: there were 78 players taking part in the OTA, the smallest group of the 10 practices. Missing because of injury were wide receivers Weston Dressler (hamstring), Junior Hemingway (strep throat) and Kyle Williams (knee), tight end Travis Kelce (knee) and cornerbacks Chris Owens (hamstring) and David Van Dyke (hamstring). Also not taking part were running back Jamaal Charles, guard Jeff Allen and cornerback Phillip Gaines. Not attending were running back De’Anthony Thomas (league rules), cornerback Brandon Flowers and outside linebacker Justin Houston . . . Returning to practice on at the end of the week were wide receiver A.J. Jenkins (hamstring) and inside linebacker Ben Johnson (hamstring.) . . . Nose tackle Dontari Poe again ran some offensive plays as a fullback in short yardage/goal line situations.

Chiefs finish OTAs, turn attention to minicamp
by Herbie Teope
(highlights)

OTA observations

• Cornerback Sean Smith, who was cited with an alleged DUI early Monday morning, finished the week running with the second-team unit for fourth straight day. Marcus Cooper took Smith’s place on the right side with the first team, while Ron Parker on the left side.

• Reid was non-committal during his post-practice media session to Smith’s return to the first team: “We’ll see,” Reid said when asked how long Smith would stay with the second team. “The other guys are performing well so we will see.” But with Flowers’ release, it wouldn’t surprise to see Smith return to his usual spot.

• Running back Knile Davis took a majority of first-team snaps during 11-on-11 drills in place of Jamaal Charles. Running back Joe McKnight spelled Davis. During a drill, McKnight came across the field open behind the linebackers and dropped a perfectly-placed pass from Alex Smith. This marked a marked second day McKnight has dropped what appeared to be an easy catch after getting behind the coverage.

• With Weston Dressler (hamstring) out, the punt returners during special team drills were Albert Wilson and Frankie Hammond. During kickoff returner drills, running backs Joe McKnight and Kniles Davis rotated with wide receiver Fred Williams. This entire scenario will evolve during mandatory minicamp with the return of rookie De’Anthony Thomas.

• Strong safety Eric Berry picked off quarterback Alex Smith during the first set of 11-on-11 drills for what would’ve been a pick-6 in live game action.

• Tight end Demetrius Harris, who emerged in 10 days of OTA workouts, closed out with two more athletic catches. Harris has been seeing time with the first-team offense alongside Anthony Fasano when the Chiefs go to a two-tight end set.

• Not to be outdone, Anthony Fasano reeled in a nice reception down the seam during a 9-7 drill, catching a well-placed pass from Alex Smith, who also closed out the OTAs with strong performances.

• The Chiefs continued the first-team shuffling on the offensive line during 11-on-11, rotating rookie Zach Fulton and Rishaw Johnson at right guard, and J’Marcus Webb and Jeff Linkenbach at right tackle. Linkenbach also spent time at left guard in Jeff Allen’s absence with Fulton at right guard.

• Fullback Jordan Campbell, a converted linebacker, turned in two straight days of displaying very soft hands when catching ball out of the backfield.

• Quarterback Chase Daniel, who has struggled at times with accuracy during the OTAs, completed a perfectly placed deep pass to wide receiver Fred Williams on the right sideline. Williams beat cornerback Sean Smith on the play.

• Defensive lineman Vance Walker, who signed a three-year, $13 million free-agent deal in March, saw action during a late segment of 11-on-11 drills with what seemed a mix of first- and second-team units. Walker, who has run mostly with backups throughout OTAs, played defensive tackle with Mike Catapano at the left defensive end spot and Mike DeVito at the right defensive end spot.

God we need a few good surprises. Hopefully Harris has a great preseason and can be a Julius Thomas clone

Chiefs’ Donald Stephenson, Jeff Allen enhanced craft during offseason
by Herbie Teope
(highlights)

Quote:
Left guard Jeff Allen and right tackle Donald Stephenson chose the path to self-improvement by spending late March into early April at the LeCharles Bentley O-Line Performance training center in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The decision for Allen and Stephenson to travel to Arizona came with encouragement from Schwartz, who had arguably one of the best seasons of his career before signing a free-agent deal with Giants in March.

“He pushed me and Jeff really hard,” Stephenson said of Schwartz. “He said he liked the potential in us and he wanted to see us grow, so he recommended us.”

Stephenson said he has a better understanding of the mental aspect and improved strength.

“I feel like a smarter player,” he said. “I won’t know how much stronger I really am until we put on pads. As far as knowing the offense, I’m miles ahead of where I was last year.”

Damn he's had about 8-10 of these according to the reports.

DAT left practice due to illness. Probably conditioning issues due to the heat and humidity today.

Everyone on defense has been beat a lot. Our success is going to depend entirely upon our front 7. Our best bet is that we end up looking like Carolina defensively. However, our DB issues will be magnified because of the scheme that we play. They're betting an awful lot on a few young guys to develop quickly.

Left tackle Eric Fisher will have a lot of ground to make up because he hasn’t been able to work in the practices and his weight lifting efforts have been stymied a bit because of the shoulder and sports hernia surgeries that he’s had this season. The Chiefs wanted Fisher to add weight, but as he was running across-the-field sprints after Friday’s practice, he looks like he may have lost weight. He’s going to need a lot of weight room time before the second Sunday of September.

People still think he was being serious about adding 30lbs.

He probably lost a lot of weight between the hernia and shoulder surgeries, and the 30 lb 'weight gain" was probably just to get him back in the 290-300 lb range.
