Would you trade the no. 1 pick for Cam Newton?

We ran into this topic late Saturday night in another thread.

I personally don't like Cam at all. He's got a ton of talent, but is an absolute idiot. He can't even learn a full playbook. Newton has put up some big numbers, but they haven't translated into a lot of wins.

He is 13-19 as a starter over 2 years.

58.9% comp | 7,920 yards pass | 40 passing TDs | 29 INTS | 1,447 rush yards | 22 rushing TDs |

Would you give up our no. 1 pick for Cam Newton?

That's extremely difficult. You're going to have to address multiple positions to bolster an entire unit to be elite.

Reporter asked Cam, "how does it feel to let the black community down" and you expected him to sit there and answer that??????

Is this serious?

I mean, I didn't have a problem with him walking off anyways. It's good when a leader takes a loss hard, and serious.

But if that's true, that's a ****ing bullshit question.

Every quarterback who has been in this situation takes to the podium and finds a way to get through it. All Newton had to do was give a couple of philosophical remarks or statements – Break down a couple of key plays and say they will learn from it and come back stronger next year. He could also say, "I'd have to watch the film."

Newton should have given the Broncos credit for playing a great game and thanked everyone for a great season. It is part of being a professional athlete and leader of a team. Russell Wilson is a perfect example of showing maturity as a leader and getting through tough questions after a Super Bowl loss.

When you give one-word answers and sulk like a child in a big game, the media will eat you up. Newton is 26 years-old and he has been in the NFL long enough to know better - Instead, he lost control of the situation.

Deion Sanders made a good point - As the NFL's Most Valuable Player; Newton should have ascended to that role. Instead, by walking out of the press conference, the narrative is writing itself, triggered by direct negatives - Something he will regret.

Just my opinion

There's a transcript. Don't see or hear anything about a black community. I think there is more to that last question than whats written. I can here "tough... [inaudible]... locker room." But still nothing about race.

You don't think this team has a good shot next year if we lock our defense guys up and add to it?

We have a lot of work to do. For us to mirror Denver we would need the following:

-A lockdown pro bowl caliber corner opposite of Peters

-A fast ILB that can cover

-An OLB similar to Ware (Hali's knee is ****ed). Even if he's healthy next year another good quality pass rusher doesn't hurt.

-A good corner to match up with slot wrs (Could it be Gaines? Nelson?).

-A new DC

We will keep Jaye Howard no doubt in my mind. Gaines looked good before he had the ACL tear.

I think the Chiefs need to try to get all D FA's back. If we lose Sean Smith then oh well bring in Jeremy Lane.

Find a fast ILB somewhere and draft CB and pass rusher with our 1st and 2nd Rd picks.
Injuries cost us a lot this year. Manning destroyed Jamel Flemming and Rodgers destroyed Marcus Cooper.

That tells you all you need to know. We aren't done yet, but we're close

There's quite a gap between Cam Newton and Alex Smith here.

For example, Newton was stymied by his terrible receivers and terrible offensive line, so it wasn't really his fault. When this happened to Alex Smith, he was supposed to "throw them open" and if he were a good QB, he'd raise the level of the people around him.

Newton turned the ball over 3 times and produced no touchdowns, to say nothing of his mental gaffe of not going in for the fumble which ended his team's chances, or his screaming at officials toward the end, but it was excusable because he was playing a great defense. Smith gets criticized when he plays a good defense and wins, but doesn't put up a lot of yards.

Smith has never once displayed a lack of maturity like Newton did last night after the game, but around here he's seen as not leading enough, just towing the company line, etc

In the game thread, you point out that Newton was overthrowing half the time, side arming passes, etc., it's because he is being hurried. Smith dealt with that all last year and it was just "no more excuses!"

It's remarkable how we at CP treat our own players worse than anyone else's. It's particularly remarkable today, because Alex Smith probably would have won that game. Nobody has ever said Smith was an elite QB but he is a mature player who usually keeps his cool in the pocket, does well at feeling the rush, and handles pressure without becoming a turnover machine or losing his accuracy.
