I recently ate a Johnny Brusco's; never been there. damn good. Big ass NY style slices. fresh ingredients (no nasty canned Mushrooms etc).
however, it's in OP. so you're screwed.

I will say - I've gotten wildly varying quality depending on Minsky's location.
The one in OP is VERY good - the one in Liberty is AWFUL. AWFUL service, pizza doesn't taste nearly as fresh etc. |

D'bronx is the best. pizza, calzones, sandwiches, all dank. Might be good for you since it is closer to downtown.
Also, i've heard good things about art of pizza, and minsky's is always good. Mandatory waldo pizza rant. Waldo can be great, but sometimes they go overboard with toppings that are best (imo) in moderation. Too much cheese ends up being a soggy greasy mess more often than not. I like their regular hand-tossed crust the best, honey wheat doesn't crisp up. I lived right behind the original location and got fed up with them mostly because of their bad service (dickhead hipsters), long wait for carry-out (1.5 hours is the standard response, buy another ****ing oven), and shit delivery service (slow, cold, smashed). I finally gave up on them a few months before I moved to tx |

I used to study there and get the lunch special. Dave is the owner, super nice guy. Good personable service, good pizza and cheap.

Downtown...
Minsky's is always good, but hope you are not in a hurry...they are almost always sloooooow. Cafe al Dente makes a good pizza...4th and Delaware. |

Haven't we talked Pizza before several times?
Tim's Pizza is a mom and pop place on US 40 in Southeast corner of Independence. Good pie, I think they may be a cash only business. Fun House is also on US 40 Highway in Independence. Hasn't changed in 40 years. Great pie, especially the canadian bacon. It's the real stuff. Minsky's franchises are independently operated. The one I go to on MO 291 in Independence is good. I really love their chef's salad to go with a pizza. Great stuff, but pricey. Some of the other Minsky's around town are not as good. Independence Square has a funky little pizza place called "Square Pizza." It's pricey, but also makes a good pie. I've been to Brucsco's out here in Overland Park. It's OK. Had a calzone for lunch. Old Shawnee Pizza is OK too, and you can find coupons on their website. Rosati's in OP is OK too. http://rosatisop.com/ All of the above are better than your chains like Papa Johns (evil Donk loving bastards), Pizza Hut and Domino's. Thanks all for the input. Sounds like many options based on preference. I will probably try Minskys and might have to try one of the other places since pizza is my favorite food and I will be in kc for a week

Did anyone read to OP? It asked about in or close to downtown. And yet there are 6 pages talking about places in f'n Lee's Summit and Independence.
If you are going to tout your infinite pizza knowledge, at least get the name of the place right.
