Roster Updates (Watts and LDT to IR, Zombo signed)
The Chiefs announced a couple of significant roster moves Tuesday afternoon, placing starting guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif as well as reserve safety Armani Watts on injured reserve while signing veteran free agent outside linebacker Frank Zombo to the 53-man roster. The team also announced the movement of undrafted rookie linebacker Rob McCray to a designation of Practice Squad/Injured.
The move of Duvernay-Tardif to injured reserve doesn't come as a big surprise after he suffered a fractured fibula in Sunday's 30-14 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, but placing Watts on injured reserve was unexpected and another unneeded blow to a safety position already decimated by injury. Watts, who was a fourth-round pick of the Chiefs in the 2018 NFL Draft, left Sunday's win over the Jaguars with a groin injury. Both players will be eligible to return off of injured reserve in eight weeks, although the Chiefs are only allowed by league rules to bring two players per season off injured reserve, and one of them could be safety Daniel Sorensen, who has been out since the preseason following knee surgery. https://247sports.com/nfl/kansas-cit...mbo-123110807/ |

He has 2 years left on a very reasonable contract. Cards just restructured his deal to give an extension to David Johnson. Would only cost the Chiefs 11/16 of his new base of $1,492,500 for 2018. Same base for next year. He's better than any active safety we have on the roster. And you just know he'd LOVE to come play for a winner. At 1-4, wouldn't the Cards like to get a draft pick for a guy that won't be playing when they finally get it together? Red, can you DM this to Brett? Thank you!

They still could of, but they had to have a roster spot for Zombo so LDT was the option!

The cap isn't, and never was, an actual barrier to signing players. It makes for a good cover for teams trying to convince fans they "tried".

Actually, that might be the most painless part for the Chiefs. With all the wiggle-room built into the process, the cap is easily manipulated. Right now the Chiefs have a formal Cap Space of $5,856,396. That would more than cover someone like Antoine Bethea (FS), if the Cards are willing to trade. Players get restructured all the time. It can often be as easy as converting some salary to bonus. Player gets the money sooner and the team gets added cap space. I won't pretend to know all the arcane intricacies of the NFL salary cap. But I do know that teams manipulate the numbers quite frequently to make room for a new signing or extension.

I am interested in whom we should acquire and at what price? Stopgaps are expensive and hard to come by this time of year.

EB? Fiddy? LTD? All of them? If you're going to enact a trade, you also need trading capital. That's picks, right? Are we seriously going all in with picks and found money (via restructuring) this year? We have The Human Trebuchet on rookie dollars for a whole bunch of years here. Keep in mind, we need to sign Hill and Conley (I hope) and a few other guys like #95. I'm all for it ... if we can figure out a way to do it ... just having trouble with that last part. FAX |

And you think they're just magically going to get it now, right now? By signing who?

Unless the guys have been offered up for trade then they're probably going to cost more than regular market value.

For right now, they could get by with little to no restructuring of current contracts... unless they go out and get a marquee, high-priced player. But someone like D.Ford would be a good candidate. He's making $8.7M in base salary. That could be converted to a bonus and the cap would jump up considerable. Houston, Fisher, Berry, Kelce are the highest paid players left, but I'm not sure how their contracts would be redone to gain cap space.
