Kelce career trajectory vs. Gonzalez

Monday Night will be Travis Kelce’s 75th career regular season game. Here’s how his numbers compare to Tony Gonzalez’s first 75 games;

Tony G: 319 rec, 3,745 yards, 27 TDs.

Travis Kelce: 364 rec, 4,687 yards, 28 TDs.

Does Kelce stand a chance of continuing that pace?

It's actually a paired analysis. Truth is that there are significant gains in both yards per game and yards per attempt over similar time frames. For example, the Chiefs average 9.0 YPA in 2018. The league leader in 2003 was Tennessee, at 7.7.

Pitt leads the league with 43 attempts per game. in 2003, the league leader passed 38 times per game.

Teams pass more often. They throw for higher yards per attempt. And back when teams threw less often and for fewer yards per attempt, Gonzalez was still more productive than Kelce, and was far better compared to his peers than Kelce, which is to say that Gonzalez is a significantly better player than Kelce.

Kelce hasn't become a TD magnet until this year with Mahomes.

Gonzalez was a TD magnet with Elvis Grbac and Tyler Thigpen.

In 2014 and 2015 he was 6th in receiving yards for tight ends. UnGonzalez.

Guys like Delanie Walker are catching 90+ balls at TE these days.

You know who Delanie Walker was at the beginning of Gonzalez's career?

Marcus Pollard.

Everyone's stats are inflated.

One of the differences that I see between TG and Kelce is how they took/take care of their bodies in the off-season. Tony seemed to learn early on that off-season conditioning was going to be the key to staying healthy for not only a long career, but would help him be healthier farther into the season.

Since the game in Denver Kelce has seemed much slower than we have seen him in the past. I don't know the reason for it, but I don't remember TG having a drop off like that within a season.

Of course, I don't think TG ever had the wheels that Kelce does.

I think Kelce is hurt and playing through some kind of pain. He looks very subdued for his normal self.

Kelce is in God mode and guess what? FOX is covering the Super Bowl.

So if we make the Super Bowl, Tony has to cover his old team he’s pissed at in a game he could never reach praising the TE his old fanbase loves more than him.

This could truly be a nightmare for our dear pal Tony
