I talked to my sister in Tallahassee earlier in the evening and they were without power. FSU is telling all students to shelter in place as there was considerable damage just to the east in the Myers Park area.

We had a CAT1 go directly over our house last year. The right side of the eye too. No "real" issues. But, we lost power for a week. We went to a hotel on the beach. Tiki bar, the beach 10 yards from our hotel room. The good Restaurant was open. Jacuzzi etc. we didn't suffer at all.

That was not the experience for most people. A lot of the deaths and the misery is suffered by the poor or young adults just starting out in life. Those people cant afford to get the hell out of the way. Those who stayed in place cant afford a hotel after the storm.

We should make more of an effort to help the poor get out of the way of these storms. It felt like everyone was on their own but no matter your station in life poor/middle class/rich everyone in the path of these storms should be able to get the hell out of the way of these storms.

One idea was to take all these school buses that are not being used and get these people out of the way. It saves the buses from damage. They are not needed anyway. Schools don't have power.

One of my best friends lives right on Panama City Beach.
Luckily he decided to evacuate. Him and the family are safe, but the town is destroyed.

Like every electrical pole is down.

My sister used to teach at a high school just south of Crawfordville. That area has a lot of trees and is pretty low. Some of her teaching friends still live down there and couldn't get out in time. I saw some of the damage near there and it wasn't pretty.

Jesus Christ Mexico Beach is just gone! Here's an aerial helicopter view. So glad we dodged something like that last year. Looks like the amount of damage a tornado reeks but over a wider area. Unlike most hurricanes this one did not lose it's hurricane force winds upon landing. I wonder why? I read it took until it hit Georgia 'til the winds dropped down to 74 mph.

Lots of pictures and videos in this link from various news sources on the destruction in Panama City. There are few of Mexico Beach. Includes a picture during the eye, where the skies are calm and blue. Pretty neat!

EDIT: Oops! Forgot to put the link in.

Heard from mom today that my step-cousin [uncle married his mom when he was about 5yo] and his wife lost their house and truck. I knew they lived in Florida, but had lost track of just where. Guess they were just a few miles outside Mexico Beach.

They took out with their pets when the storm first started, so luckily they have their health and each other, though.

Just paid off his truck this summer and took off comprehensive. So now he'll have to hope homeowner's accepts coverage, as it was in the garage.

My daughter did an internship at Tindal AFB last year. She stayed at a house on Circle Drive in Mexico Beach. All that is left of that house is a slab.

Isn't disaster relief the type of thing that could cover this

edit: or maybe they'll get lucky and catch a roll of paper towels from Trump

Hurricanes are cool unless your power gets knocked out for the week. Then they suck. But that aftermath drive the day after the hurricane...
