Why do you live where you live?

This is about your general community or area, not about your specific house. Think of it as the metro area you live in, or the county you live in.

Poll coming as soon as I file of change of address form for it.

For me, I live in Denver because I got a job here. I didn't know anyone here and had never seen the city. However, I had always thought it would be a good place to live. My wife and I were generally targeting the region of the US that was west of the Austin-Minneapolis line, and generally excluding the Pacific coast states (per my wife's preference on the latter). A job came through in Denver and we jumped on it. That was 25 years ago, so obviously it was a good outcome.

Growing up in a little rural town in southern MO, Liberty felt very similar.

I liked a lot of north KC as well though. Parkville is pretty cool.

I loved KC, miss it a lot. Only 3 hours away now, so still get up there a lot.

I relocated from KC to Chicago 3+ years ago for my wife's career. I'm 100% virtual in my career, and she had a choice of LA or Chicago. We chose Chicago as the salary differential for the LA position didn't offset the cost of living differential. There are days I hope Cthulhu would rise from Lake Michigan and lay waste to the city and then others where I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

While I love KC, I wish I would've relocated sooner in life. Not having kids to raise, I probably stayed way longer than I should have. My only complaint about Chicago is the political environment. I can't imagine how much greater it would've been to live here when I was carefree enough not to even pay attention to such things.

Yeah, I've loved every trip I've made to Chicago. Of course I'm just visiting I guess.

Really enjoy the city.

You should check out northern california along the coast if you get a chance..its harder to do..you'll need a car and some time to drive but it is worth it.

also, the farm country here (a little inland) is really, really beautiful

You cant really make too many broad generalizations about 'coastal' regions, IMO. You're missing out if you think its all crowded beaches with annoying people etc
I lived in Napa for two years, and yes, it was a LOT nicer in NorCal than SoCal in many ways. The water was cold (from diving to surfing), but the people up north, sans the Bay Area liberals, were awesome. My skipper had property near Mendocino, and we'd go up there from time to time to hang, and it was a great drive there, and a fun stay.

But he had property there, he didn't live there. Unfortunately most people have to live in populated areas because of jobs, it's just the nature of the beast.

That being said, if I had the opportunity to open a dive shop somewhere on the mediterranean coast, I might suck it up and deal with the sand...

I'd say 2018 Liberty was 2001 Lee's Summit when we built our house; still very country, but the drive into my office downtown (not that I go there very often anymore!!!), was only 30 minutes.

They sold off the back two lots about 25 years ago as the house was on the biggest lot in the development.

Yeah, my stompingrounds is near Gualala (the Gualala river which is right at the border beween sonoma county and mendocino county where the Gualala river spills into the ocean). A little south of the actual town of mendocino. Your skipper has fine taste in property......thats some amazing country.

No chance you can get some acreage to live on unless you are a farmer, and then, like all farming, it's a tough row to hoe. I do miss the weather there from time to time, mainly two months of summer and three months of winter, other than that, I'll just visit. More power to ya though. Glad you are happy there.

It does suck that people are being forced out due to high costs. I hope people hang on a couple years because I feel like there will be a pretty major housing market correction in the next few years and the opportunity to buy something more reasonable will come around again...Like it did in 2009-2011 and also early in the 2000's and around 96-98.

I hope so anyway, I reallly REALLY want an apple orchard....LOL..and I will have to wait till the current bubble bursts to get one. But there will be a burst, mark my words.

If you ever end up visiting please reach out I can at least PM you a list of recommendations that suit your interest.

I don't know of that river, but I did do some "white water FLOAT trips" on the Upper Cache Creek back then. It was fun, and like surfing on the east coast (and a lot of the west coast TBH), add some booze to the mix and those class-2s seem a lot "funner"...

The skipper was from CA, his family dated back to pre-gold rush days in Cali, so the property had been in his family for generations and as he said it, when he shit in the woods, he was shitting on his retirement. Ha...

But he learned to shoot up in them-there hills, and he was a darn fine shot... All in the 80s so Cali hadn't gone nuts (yet). And no, we didn't add booze to the shooting, that we were kinda careful about...

I just had one of my staff relo to Freeport, same general area. He's an FL native, like his wife, and they're giddy... I spent some time in Panama City (the good Panama), Navy dive school, and I can see where beach-inclined people who don't hate heat and humidity would love it. And he built a VERY nice place. I was quite impressed. With the size of the snakes too!! LOL..
