GIG HARBOR, Wash. (AP) - Two pit bull terriers broke into a house through a pet door Tuesday and attacked a woman in her bed, mauling her badly, a Pierce County sheriff's spokesman said.

The woman was able to grab a gun and try to shoot the dogs, then break away from the attack and lock herself in her car, where she called 911, sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The woman, who was not immediately identified, was taken to a hospital in Tacoma, where she was listed in serious condition.

Officers planned to talk to the dogs' owner.

The pit bulls also killed a neighbor's Jack Russell terrier, which entered the house during the attack, Troyer said.

"The thought is that the Jack Russell heard noise in the neighbor's house, came in and was attacked by the dogs," Troyer said.

Firefighters responded first, locking the dogs in the house, treating the woman and calling for an ambulance.

Officers "had to pepper spray and fight the dogs until they were detained. We almost had to shoot them on site," Troyer said.

The dogs were taken to a Humane Society and will probably be destroyed, he said.

It was not immediately known why the dogs entered the house, whether the woman had dogs of her own or what set off the attack.

Just learn a little about the breed before you post on them. They are inherently animal aggressive no question, many dogs are. They are the ultimate athlete the canine world has to offer by far. Talk about miles and miles. They are not for everyone though. If people do their due diligence and decide they want one I would highly recommend starting with a small female. Are there other dogs I like, sure. I like bullies in general followed by a few other breeds. None of them are the athletes these dogs are though.

I appreciated your respect for the pit's natural abilities. But you say little things that seem to ignore the obvious. You don't see chows, shepards, dobbermans, even rottweilers doing these things in near the same frequency. Don't you think there are as many if not more irresponsible owners that have these dogs? Yes there are but these dogs don't freak out like pit bulls do when up against a bad owner.

Pit bulls have gained a bad reputation, deservedly or not, the fact remains that they are involved in far more ugly incidents. I think their bad reputation has attracted the wrong crowd(mostly idiots, sorry) and with this kind of dog that mix is dangerous. More so than with any other kind dog. What here don't you agree with?

I am an athlete and have been my entire life so I wanted a dog that was the ultimate athlete that I could do activities with. So lets take a look at this ultimate athlete. Endurance, when I go bike riding he can hang for well over two hours. Try running a shepherd like that you will kill it inside 30 minutes. Very, very few dogs can hang like that. Speed, they like a lightning bolt inside 100 yards. Last year at the beach I apologized to a guy for not having him on a leash while I was running him. He said no big deal as he could never catch up to his whippets. I said ok and let him go. He ran up on his whippets like a lion taking down a gazelle touching their hind quarters with his paw twice, once from each side just to let them know he was there. The look on the guys face was priceless. “ That’s a huge dog (60 pounds) to be running that fast that’s amazing” is what he said. You can find many pictures if you punch that in a search engine. My dog will hit water for the first time this weekend. The APBT is also one of the top breeds in agility contests. Courage and Gameness, nothing comes close to an APBT in these areas I don’t think anybody would even attempt to debate that. My dogs father was dead game and a good dog will be absolutely fearless. If there is a grizzly in my back yard he would want a piece of that ass. MOHillbilly posted some links to his dogs going after wild boar. If that doesn’t convince you nothing will. The most recent mountain lion attack out here was a guy who was riding bikes on a mountain trail with his friend and his dog, a lab. When the lion attacked the dog high tailed it out of there. That is not a trait I want in my dog. If my dog did that I would kill the POS if I survived. Intelligence, the APBT may not be at the very top of the list in the canine world in this area but they are still very smart and trainable. The top canine search and rescue team in Northern California are APBTs. They are just beginning to understand just how trainable they are. These are the reasons I love the APBT. Once you have had this breed it is very hard to own anything else. I would never suggest anybody get one though that isn’t completely dedicated to working it out hard as well as training it. For those who do though you will be rewarded with the ultimate companion the canine world has to offer IMO.

Look, I had an old friend back in the 80's, before pits became a cult item, who had one. It was huge but docile. It would come to you from across a sandy yard dragging a 50 pound weight then lick you in the face while its tail was waggling. This guy gave it so much love and treated it with so much respect. I thought it might have been great around children. So I have seen how a pit bull can be just like any other dog. But I never lost sight of the fact that if he fell just a little bit short of that it could have been a very dangerous animal.

And Frazod, right on man. Just like I said. I think pits are owned for all the wrong reasons.

For a guy I thought was one of the coolest people here ever you sure have become a dick head lately. From the beginning of this your accusations have been off base at best, a flat out lie at worst. Whether it was Vick or the Duke case I never have condoned a rush to judgement. I have been on record for a long time now saying I think dog fighting should be legalized and regulated. There would be far less fighting and it would be monitored much better like it is in Japan. In a nutshell it would be far more humane than it is now as a whole.

As far as my dog goes many members of the planet have seen Taz. Braincase, DanT, Mojo, maybe even your buddy Jim. He doesn't have a mark on him. I will not fight my dog.

If you bothered to read what I posted you also have two that were the most successful search and rescue team in California as well. They can be trained very well. I have been very tolerant with you. Like I said earlier you should learn something about the breed before you start spouting off your expertise.
