Teenager's last words: "Driving and facebooking is not safe! Haha."

Helloooo Darwin awards!

Quote:
Bright, outgoing college teen Taylor Sauer proved in the last minutes of her life she knew right from wrong — but still committed a fatal mistake.

Sauer was making a late-night, four-hour drive from the Utah State University campus in Logan to visit her folks in Caldwell, Idaho. She passed the time along I-84 messaging a pal on Facebook about the Denver Broncos football team. But she stopped short, writing in her final missive, "I can't discuss this now. Driving and facebooking is not safe! Haha."

Moments later, Sauer, going more than 80 mph, slammed into a tanker truck that was slowly creeping up a hill at 15 mph. She was killed instantly; investigators saw no signs that she applied the brakes before the fatal crash. And in checking her cell phone records, they learned Sauer was posting about every 90 seconds during her drive.

"I think she was probably (texting) to stay awake, she was probably tired," Taylor's dad, Clay Sauer, told Ann Curry on TODAY Monday. "But that's not a reason to do it, and the kids think they're invincible. To them, (texting) is not distracting, they're so proficient at texting, that they don't feel it's distracted driving."

Clay and Shauna Sauer, still grieving over their 18-year-old daughter's Jan. 12 death, have become lobbyists in their home state to urge the state legislature to pass a ban on texting while driving. Idaho is one of 13 states in the U.S. that has no such law in place.

It's a 2 way street folks.
truckers always cut you off and leap frog at low speeds when you're in the passing lane and they're trailing another trucker while you try and pass the two. Its very dangerous. I always slow down for another car to pass. I hate those assholes that speed up when you're trying to pass and I feel like its those same asshole's behind the wheel of an 18 wheeler not wanting anyone to pass them. Like they're some ****in highway hero because of their job discrepancy.

That's just good advice... people spend so much time passing trucks, and it's really damn annoying. I'll watch a car drive up behind a truck going 5mph over the speed limit, just to slow down and take their damn time while they're driving right next to one. WTF? GTFO out of there.

Yeah, there's too much that can go wrong when you're in a car next to a truck. I too am surprised that this doesn't get taught more. When I'm driving on a highway and want to pass a truck I won't even try until I can see that there's enough space ahead of it for me to accelerate by it without pause.

And I have no real justification of this other than a fading knowledge of physics, but I won't pass a big truck on an outside turn if at all possible. If something goes wrong and the truck is on the inside, it's going to be headed my way. I'll pass on the inside of a turn or on a straightaway, thank you very much.

On a related note, I'm also surprised by how little understanding there is of blind spots in cars. It always makes me grumble when I see a car or pickup gaining ground behind me, and then instead of passing me they end up sitting in my blind spot for a while. Never sit in another vehicle's blind spot. Either pass them or slow down. I don't understand why this isn't taught more.

And of course, this all applies to non-urban driving. In urban highway driving everyone is kind of screwed by traffic volume and you just have to make the best of it.

Whenever I buy a new car the first thing I get for it is the round stick-on spot mirrors for the rear view mirrors. Very helpful in eliminating blind spots.

Do those really help? I've seen them but I've never used them.

Since my car is a convertible I don't have blind spots in the summer. But in the winter I've got a big blind spot. The difference is a little confusing too, because in the summer I generally don't use the side view mirrors and just glance over my shoulder. In the winter that doesn't work at all.

I have not been in an accident with a car since 1988, I currently have 15 years in a row of safe driving, I know what the **** I am doing.
I have never hurt anyone while driving, I don't tailgate, I don't punish you or risk your life when you do something stupid...

If you are in such a hurry, you probably should try leaving earlier.
You are? Is that a state thing? I know they’re not governed in Kansas, pretty sure Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas are the same way.

I think so.
The side mirrors on Mrs. Radar’s ’57 Ford are on the fenders and basically useless without those dome stick-on mirror things.

Yes, they help a great deal. For a couple of bucks, you can't go wrong putting them on.

Yes, quite useful. I had some on my Explorer, and soon will be getting them for the Volvo.

Let me explain something else...

There are cowboys out there , everybody knows this and there are many that give the good drivers a bad name...

I can Promise you there is nothing more a driver loves than being in his own space in the right lane, I wish I never had to hit the left lane.

Sit in the drivers seat for a minute, as I said earlier my truck will go 65-66 mph MAX on flat ground.. I am in a 65mph zone, and a car is going 60 mph in front of you.. You check your mirrors (I never cut people off) and then get into the left lane to pass, as soon as you do this car driver somehow gets hypnotized by your trailer(s) and automagically he is now riding beside you doing the EXACT same speed as you and you are maxed out... so what do you do? I usually back off slow enough to get back behind him as to not clog the hammer lane but as soon as you get behind him, he reduces his speed back to 60 and you play this game for the next 15 miles until he decides to take a call or exit.

I don't want to be in the hammer lane because it reduces my vision and safety to be out there...
I don't want to be first, I don't want to pass you, I would rather you just go on and get away from me. Lots of men do this but Women are the worst .

Now you guys can think I am being cocky but I have seen the carnage these vehicles can cause after being in this business since 1986, Don't believe me? Look at the Mythbusters below and see what can happen when a shredded tire goes thru your windshield.. Mudflaps don't stop this, I have actually been driving and had a tire explode and it rips the who mudflap and bracket off and those things are tough...

Next time you think of driving beside a big truck or tailgating one, remember this video. Oh and one more thing... This is 40mph not 65mph

Ive said it before, texting and driving is way more dangerous than driving while drunk, especially since women prob do it way more and they already have a driving handicap, unless you r extremely ****ed up drunk though. But the irony in her death is almost funny
