Once Albert is gone...

Should Eric Fisher be the 2014 opening day starter at left tackle?

**** that.

If you have no one else to franchise, you franchise him and try and trade for picks.

Fisher will probably be a bust at LT if he does not start. But if he comes to become a good RT, sigh. At least we got something.

They tried that last season.

It didn't work.

They will not franchise tag him again.

Problem is, the team and Albert are stuck. They drafted Fisher and have Stephenson, both of whom have much better feet and hands than Albert and have a better/higher ceiling at either tackle position.

However, Albert doesn't seem interested in taking the "demotion" and moving into the LG spot, which is currently manned by Jeff Allen - a guy who doesn't really seem to be a NFL LG and has struggled with the position since his rookie year.

The Chiefs need a LG, probably have a guy in Albert who could be the best LG in the NFL if he made the switch, but he doesn't seem to be inclined to do that and wants top 2 LT money.

And he most definitely won't play under a franchise tag if the Chiefs put him at LG, even though the top OG's in the NFL are currently making a lot of money.

As such, franchising him isn't going to get the Chiefs anything other than a hold out or hindering the development of a guy who is more suited to play on the edge.

This is the impact of drafting what currently looks like a bust with the #1 overall pick.

The Chiefs are going to have to give Fisher every opportunity to earn the LT spot this offseason.

It will probably be a struggle, the Chiefs are going to have to compensate for his likely shortcomings at the position and it will be a snowball effect.

I'd bet a dollar to a doughnut that Eric Fisher kicks the living shit out of stuff at LT this next season.

He flashed some really impressive stuff every once and a while this past season that showed his massive potential. As well, he seemed to do better against the pure pass rush guy, especially later in the season. Absolutely stonewalled Von Miller.

I think he blows up for 2014.

I don't give a shit about who wins the training camp battle. You measure the position by upside, and I'm not talking only about draft upside. I'm more talking about making sure that on the practice field, you see things that make you still believe the guy lives up to his draft stock. Everyone should have known from season 2 that Gholston was not the guy they thought they drafted. Same with Baldwin. Stephenson has been in this league longer than Fisher. He is going to have the cards stacked in his favor. Keep in mind that Fisher had a very shortened offseason due to new CBA rules. A few years ago, we had this debate about whether an experienced Damion McIntosh should start over a wildly inexperienced Branden Albert. We clearly made the right decision there to go with upside over "ready now."

Fisher is better suited for Left Tackle. He's not a power guy, but his size is great for Left Tackle if he adds a few pounds. His shoulder will be 100% whereas he looked like he compromised a bit. He'll play with most instinct whereas he often got beat last year by instinctively using the wrong initial technique. The book is far from written on the guy. But glad people are trying so hard to label him a bust and are rooting for him to fail.

I don't know how anyone seeing Fisher play last year states that he should get a chance to move to the left side. I would be more confident with Stephenson there, but then we hit a matter of depth.

Our guard play in general was not great last year. Allen was better than Asamoah who does not seem to live up to the nasty rep he had in college.

Fisher was a rookie in a ridiculously shortened offseason due to stupid CBA rules, playing a new position with a bum shoulder. His feet were not a problem. When they were, it's because he misjudged the technique.

A full offseason, a full injury recovery, and a full offseason in the weight room, and a return to his natural position not to mention a position he is WAY better suited for. Let's give him that and see how he does in the offseason. I have more confidence than most that he'll end up looking a hell of a lot better than what we saw.

As Sacc makes the case for, it wasnt ALL bad for Fisher, he had his moments such as stuffing Miller all game, another game where he had the highest PFF rating etc.

I have little doubt the skills are there, the bigger worry is will he ever be able to stay healthy IMO.
