Giving Alex the 'Joe Flacco Treatment'

The contract talks between the Chiefs and Alex Smith is our big story right now. Especially with his old squad signing Kaepernick today.. this situation gets more and more interesting. A couple of observations of our team...

Defensively, we are as stacked as we are going to be for a long time this season. Chances are we won't play another season with all the talent we currently have on that side again (Hali older, Houston/Berry/Poe with extensions in the nearer future)

Offensively, if all the OTA talk is real and Alex is really playing as well as they say (and the WR's such as Bowe), we are a solid offensive line from perhaps a top 10 offense.

It's fair to say the 'window' is as wide as it will ever be. With possible big contributions from Kelce, Commings, Knile, and other 1st/2nd year players, we may have a Super Bowl bound squad. Which is what leads me to this though: Let the season play out before signing Alex. If he plays well, a playoff win or two? Sign him for 100 million. If he wins a Super Bowl? Give him whatever he wants and a key to the city. If he and the team bombs? Let him walk and use Murray or Bray, use the money to keep our defensive stars.

This is the right plan, imo. Discuss.

I think I would rather have two dominant, All-Pro level 5-techs in my 3-4 defense than have 1 dominant young NT and an OLB who's only really good against back-ups and rookies (really hope that changes).

If you have those two dominant DEs who can rush the passer and dominate in the run game in your 3-4 system, it makes everything else a lot easier to get.

I'd trade Houston for Wilkerson or Richardson and stick them next to Poe. Ford would be fine in replacing Houston because of the presence of a dominant 5-tech next to him. It'll allow Ford to really use his speed to his advantage and easily make up for the loss of production from Houston. Hell, we would likely be a better defense if that trade were to go down.

There is only one that I know that is even picking us to end up 2cd in the division. There are a few that are picking us 3rd behind the Donkos and Chargers. But thanks for playing and thinking that you know more than anyone else.

Antonio Pierce picked us to win it last week. I haven't seen many below 2nd, which if you didn't know can still mean playoffs.

Antonio Pierce yeah a former LB not a real analytical type with years of experience. He is not a pundit. He is just an ex-player that has been hit in the head a lot.

I'd probably trade Houston for Wilkerson as well (not Richardson... yet) but we were talking about swapping entire defenses.

Ryan can turn over his entire defense, loose his best players, and there's always someone to step up. He's the difference maker. If we swapped personnel top to bottom it wouldn't matter, because Ryan's defense would still be the better group. Rex would love to have a group with so many versatile guys who can rush the QB from different spots. Flowers is a great blitzer. DJ is a good blitzer. Berry is a great blitzer. Solid edge rush from the OLB's and an anchor in the middle... Rex could make this group dominant.

Same guy who said we wouldn't be as good as many were expecting in 2011/2012.

"stacked" would imply something other than what we saw last year when Hali or Houston were out, which was a defense that looked mediocre at best.

Sutton's D in the 2nd half of the season looked like Gunther's 2004 joke of a defense.

I honestly believe this by far the best and likely the most productive player we added this offseason.

And yes, I think he'll have a bigger impact than any of our rookies.

In two years Fish won't even be a starter. Anywhere.

Not to dismiss our huge hole at both G positions.

I love to believe in potential. I might be one of the last Hudson homers on this BB. By the end of this season he'll be one of only 2 guys worth keeping (him and Stephenson.)

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

We'll know more about Fisher this coming year.

At this same time we all thought (myself included) that Poe was a wasted pick for similar reasons. I mean he didn't play well as a rookie but I've seen guys who had far worse rookie seasons (relative to positions) who turned out fine. Plus rookie OT's struggle pretty often.

I don't think that argument's over.

Poe had 7 really good games last year and then was invisible.

I don't see that as justification for where he was drafted...

You're right about getting kicked in the junk by Elway and losing out on Sanders, but I'd argue that the biggest issue on the team is the OL by far. That's telling because the state of the WR's is bad BUT we made due with basically the same crew last year (Except for Dex, which I think is a far bigger loss than most but his WR production should be covered) and it was Reid Year 1. I don't think this time around the Chiefs fare as well with this OL.
