My Fellow Chiefs Fans:

I felt the need to weigh in on the state of Chiefs Fan Relations in cyberspace and am submitting this essay for your consideration.

Cyberspace has created a unique opportunity for us Chiefs fanatics to maintain community in ways that non-KC-area fans could not before the word wide web. As with other modes of communication, cyberspace is in the public domain and deserves the highest consideration of the obligation of citizenship. This expression of our freedom as with all others is dependent upon the goodwill and mutual respect of the citizens who participate and unfortunately can be abused by the unneighborly and the irresponsible.

Our passion for all things Chiefs arouses deep and heartfelt opinions which we post here for all to read. There are and always will be disagreements about coaching decisions, players, rules of the game, etc… That is all part of being an NFL fan. There is also incumbent upon all of us as Americans a duty to preserve order, respect dissent, tolerate differences and express our manifold freedoms with reverence and brotherly regard.

I myself have been thoroughly abused on Chiefsplanet.com. My views are bombastic, intensely held and highly subjective. They cause people to wonder if I’m a Chiefs fan at all (that is if I do not tote the party line about the current regime). However, none of us deserves the type of pack mentality mob rule that eventually caused me to withdraw from that fan forum altogether.

I am responding this day of 24 May 2002 because it was brought to my attention that I am still discussed or mentioned on that BB regularly even though I have not posted there since December 2001. One of those threads was started by JD Prez and included an invite to post here. For that I am grateful.

Cyberspace, like the streets of our cities, is accessible to the disrespectful and the hateful. What is a Chiefs fan then to do? Let’s pledge to be responsible, respectful and patriotic in our cyber discourse with one another. Let’s not reward the vile and belligerent with attention. Let us remember above all else, that there is a living, breathing human being on the other end of each post. Let us strive to preserve our unity as citizens and brothers regardless of our passionate disagreements about football, which, in the final analysis, is mere entertainment.

Finally, let us remember that we are a nation at war. This is a time to put aside the petty and the self-aggrandizing, and unite for the common cause. As a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, I have the privilege of wearing USA on my chest everyday. That is the one team we are all a part of and we will remain strong and undefeated as long as we commit to stand united, brave and faithful.

When I posted that, I had no knowledge of the flamefest in progress between members of the Planet and NEPA. Perhaps this guy was sincere in his invitation to me, perhaps not. I roundly condemn all activity outside the standards endorsed in my open letter. If ANYONE is calling a fellow poster's home without welcome, especially if there is abuse, threats, etc... that is a crime. It is difficult for me to conceive of this as all one-sided seeing the way I was dogpiled on, flamed, etc.. as a member of the Planet. I take no sides. I want no part of it.

The way you were treated here, especially by me, was not fair, and to that I have and will own up to.

However, do not consider JDPrez your "friend". There's a reason I haven't become involved in this latest round of hostility. JD's sole purpose in life is to make HIS board, the one he rules with an iron fist, the only Chiefs board on the net...

His history is painted with past problems with SEVERAL other BB sites, and Chiefsplanet is only the latest...

I've been getting a steady stream of invitations to come back to the Planet. You are the #1 reason I am hesitant. That is not a slam on you, I just got hurt last December and I still don't feel very welcome. I'm not asking to do anything or change anything. In the end, I will do what I do out of conscience toward God and loyalty first and foremost to the other Christains on the BB. Forgive me for invoking you by name on PSP. I shouldn't have done that.
