Malaysia Airlines loses contact with plane carrying 239 people

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane with 239 aboard enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The airline said in a statement early Saturday it was attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. It was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m.

China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and did not make contact with Chinese air traffic controllers.

The plane is carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members. The airline said it is working with authorities to locate the plane.

Boeing said on its Twitter account it is monitoring the situation, and "our thoughts are with everyone on board."

So, was the descent from 45000ft consistent with natural drop in altitude?

What I'm asking is, did go to 45k, then organically drop the way it would if everyone was dead.... or was there still piloting after that altitude (steering, controlled descent, adjustments, etc..)

yeah, there's really no reason for anyone to ever be in that area. Aside from maybe the south pole, its the most desolate area on earth.

Im not even sure the on board systems would alow to be programed in an accent that exceeded the airplanes safe ceiling.

I think this is why the authorities are so curious about the erased data from his flight sim hard drive.

This would not be a maneuver you practice live or even on a airline sim.

Maybe he new that if he flew it till they all passed out from depressurizing the cabin then hit the autopilot button. The plane would automatically try to recover from a decent to 23000 feet. once the systems on board deemed it safe it continued on the auto pilot program with the dead cabin aboard till it ran out fuel.

We did see reports that the plane was piloting waypoints early in the diversion. I don't know when that occurred relative to the ascent to 45,000 feet. That's probably a key in figuring out if the pilot offed himself.

Did anyone read the pilot that posted a theory that it really was an accident?

His idea was an electrical fire. And, it really does make sense.

He pointed out that if you project the changed flight path, it leads to an airport closer than a return to Malaysia, and the approach is better....over sea vs. crossing 8,000 ft high ridges.

He saw this as a pilot looking for an emergency landing. Then he speculated an onboard electrical fire. He said what pilots would do is throw the busses, which would shut down all kinds of systems. The climb to 45,000 feet would then make perfect sense. What you'd be trying to do is max your height, decompress the cabin, and hope to starve the fire of oxygen.

He thinks the pilots, and passengers, were overcome by smoke and the plane flew on autopilot before crashing.

Yup, that was discussed earlier in the thread.

The only problem with that theory, is it ignores obvious signs towards the pilots.

The pilot turned off the controls, THEN says, "all right, goodnight" before turning it around. Then it's ignoring he has a home flight simulator. I live next to two pilots. An elaborate flight simulator is actually not common for pilot's to have at their house. While having a flight simulator to begin with might not raise red flags, it is a piece to the puzzle.

Just as well as his divorce and politics. While by itself not that big, when you look at big picture, there are a lot of signs pointing right at one or both.

That was my guess on the second day and nothing that has come out makes it any less likely.

What I would ask about that theory is that the Boeing engineers were, in initial days, saying it's very hard to imagine any sort of a fire on a modern 777 that would knock out their ability to communicate or control the aircraft - basically, they didn't think this was plausible?

Anyone else remember that?
