But I certainly hope you're right that, basically, its just the finer points, the "safety net" thats mucking things up a bit... I hope thats true, dude proved himself to me last year, what he overcame for the 9-0 start alone is worth my admiration. |

The Jay Cutler contract keeps being brought up as establishing the market... but I think it's a relevant example in one other way:
I think it's a great example of a team playing chicken with a good but not great QB and bailing first. The Bears panicked about finding a replacement for Cutler, long-term, and gave him way more money than was really responsible. We'll see how it plays out for them long-term, but it doesn't look pretty. But even that deal has a reasonable bailout after Year 3. A reasonable extension for Alex Smith - especially one with a bailout after the 2015 season - makes a lot of sense from the Chiefs side of things. But, if you can't agree on that, paying him $8 + $16 million (franchise) + $19 million (franchise at 120 percent) doesn't look like a bad alternative to me.

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest though if he signed a deal that everyone here loved, nor would I blame him if he signed for Flacco money. Dude has a right (and some would say a responsibility) to get what he can get - same as any man.

Smith should sit out the OTAs and pressure the team to extend him. He needs to cash in NOW! One game behind this OL and he's going to spend weeks icing up.

44 million guaranteed. (The amount he would make the next 3 years if he plays out his contract and is then franchised twice) The guaranteed money is usually half the total amount meaning he should probably get 6 years for 90, but I also think he deserves bonuses for playoff wins/Super Bowl appearances yadda yadda...adding another 10 million to the contracts total value...like 1 million per playoff appearance...2 million per playoff win and the full 10 if the team makes the Super Bowl. I think that would be as great deal for both sides |

Not bad at all. I have a question though: once all guaranteed money is paid can you cut them without killing your cap? I suck at the CBA part of this sport.

I believe you get that done by building in a roster bonus before the 4th year (if you're trying to guarantee 3 years) that creates a keep him or cut him situation.

If a player signs a 5 year contract with a 10 million dollar signing bonus, each year counts 2 million (10/5) against the cap over the course of the deal, so if you cut him before the fourth year (2 years remaining) the 4 million immediately goes against your cap that year unless you cut them after June 1 where you can spread that cap hit over 2 years. Since the new cba, teams can designate a player as a June 1 cut before June 1 and get that same benefit. |

He would get traded ala Donovan McNabb before the contract expires.

We're the only team in the league dumb enough to go for a trade like that...

There will be a few teams with retiring quarterbacks that might want a plug n play QB at that point.

Andrew Brandt on the Ross Tucker podcast talking Alex Smith for the first 10 minutes or so. Mostly stuff being said in this thread, but relevant. AB thinks Condon is probably around 18 or so, Chiefs might be coming in at less than that right now. |

This is where I'm sitting currently. If he balls out on this schedule, assuming it is as murderous as it seems now, then we've just found our franchise guy and probably won't hesitate to pay him $18-20. If he plays like shit, we know we haven't found our franchise guy so hopefully we let him walk. If he ends up having a mediocre season with no playoff wins ala this past season but still shows promise, he'll be forced to sign at a discounted rate or hit the road. |
