The MIA Heat Show Thread

LA will be dethroned. The LAC Lake Show will be dead. So it's time to create a thread to follow the new dynasty.

Going on tour starting this October.

This is what I've been wanting to happen for a while..

Could the Heat have one more big move left?
by: Ira Winderman August 24th, 2010 | 3:01 PM

Normally, the signing of Kwame Brown would not be the type of move that would reverberate around the NBA.

But because the failed former No. 1 overall draft pick landed in Charlotte, the move becomes noteworthy.

The Bobcats not only have Nazr Mohammed and DeSagana Diop already under contract at center, but also currently are in possession of Erick Dampier.

Only Dampier is not in possession of a guaranteed contract.

The addition of Brown makes it all the more likely that Dampier is not long for the Bobcats, not with $13.1 million due this coming season.

Unlike with a buyout, the Bobcats simply can walk away from Dampier at any time, without owing a single dime.

The Brown signing seemed to send a clear signal of the eventual intent.

Enter the Heat, a team that currently features Joel Anthony, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Jamaal Magloire and Dexter Pittman at center.

Dampier arguably is better than all four.

And Pat Riley certainly has had his way of creating value this offseason.

The difference with Dampier is that it’s not as if he also will be getting his $13.1 million this season. He likely will get little of it, if any. Instead, he well could seek exception money or some left over cap space elsewhere, rather than the minimum that Ilgauskas and Magloire have accepted from the Heat.

But Pat Riley would have one bargaining chip that no other contender could offer:

“How would you like to be the starting center for a potential NBA championship team?”

Oh, “And if this works out, we’ll have a full mid-level exception available next summer.”

Right now, Dampier remains a Bobcat.

But pretty soon his meter is about to start ticking.

And Michael Jordan now has three centers who will earn just about the same combined as Dampier will earn alone.

The math makes no sense in Charlotte. The question is whether Riley’s new-age math will tempt in Miami.

Yeah, LeBron is all jokes during the offseason. No working out, no practicing, just Vegas & beaches.

Hurricanes get a surprise visit from LeBron

By TIM REYNOLDS
AP Sports Writer

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- LeBron James went back to school Thursday, working out against the Miami Hurricanes.

The NBA's two-time reigning MVP and some of his new Miami Heat teammates made a surprise stop at the university's basketball facility for some informal scrimmaging against the Hurricanes. James, Udonis Haslem, Mike Miller, Patrick Beverley and New Orleans guard Chris Paul - a close friend of James - played pickup for more than an hour.

"Just left 'The U' hooping with the team ... Great runs! Needed that," James posted on Twitter after the workout session.

...

James had a variety of eye-popping dunks during the pickup games, which were played without an audience - and with no video.

Don't hold your breath, Jerry.

Quote:
Jerry Stackhouse is waiting by the phone
by: Ira Winderman August 30th, 2010 | 3:56 PM

Jerry Stackhouse has all the ringers on. The cell phone. The football-helmet phone. The cordless. Even the rotary throwback model.

He’s waiting for the caller ID to read, “Riley, Pat.”

As are many unsigned veterans these days.

From an interview that can be found at slamonline.com:

SLAM: “If you’re still going to do it a little bit longer, what’s the next move for Jerry Stackhouse? What jersey will we see you in this season?”

JS: “I’m just waiting, man. Everybody is kind of intrigued about the Miami situation and seeing if they’re trying to add another veteran to their team. If that happened, I’d be thrilled to be there. I think that would feel like Hall of Fame accreditation to have a guy like Pat Riley come and ask you to be a part of their team. If it doesn’t happen there, it doesn’t happen there and I’ll just try to do what I can somewhere else.”

Stackhouse showed over a half a season in 2009-10 that he could contribute to a playoff team, as he did with the Milwaukee Bucks.

At 36, he apparently believes he can do it over a full season with the Heat.

To a degree, the Heat, for its wealth of talent, is limited to LeBron James and Dwyane Wade when it comes to off-the-dribble scorers.

For those rare nights when LeBron or Dwyane aren’t able to go, there could be something to be said about having such a player in reserve.

But it’s also about chemistry, and the understanding that the minutes might only come once or twice a month, if at all.

So Jerry waits, for the phone to ring, beep or vibrate.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento County authorities say Los Angeles Lakers guard Matt Barnes has been arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.

Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran says deputies arrested Barnes after responding to what was termed an incomplete 911 call from a home around 4:16 p.m. Wednesday.

Deputies say both Barnes and the woman had visible injuries, but took Barnes into custody after determining he had been the primary aggressor.

The name of the woman was not released, but she was described by authorities as "a woman who lived with him and with whom he had a dating relationship."

Barnes was booked into the Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of domestic violence and maliciously obstructing the use of a telephone line.

He posted a $50,000 bond and was released. He is scheduled to be arraigned in court Monday.

Aaron Goodwin, Barnes' agent, reached in Turkey by ESPNLosAngeles.com, said in a text message that he was "getting the facts first from both parties" before commenting further.

"I plan to find out accurately what transpired, and go from there," Goodwin said via text.

Barnes, who attended UCLA, signed a two-year, $3.6 million contract with the Lakers in July.

Dampier released by Bobcats, is impressed with Miami Heat

Veteran center Erick Dampier was cut Tuesday by the Charlotte Bobcats and could be targeted by the Miami Heat if he clears waivers Friday as expected.

The Charlotte Bobcats, as expected, released center Erick Dampier and his $13 million, non-guaranteed contract in a cost-cutting move to steer clear of the luxury tax.

The Bobcats acquired Dampier from the Dallas Mavericks in July as part of a five-player trade. But Charlotte had no intentions of keeping Dampier, whose contract would have been a burden to the cash-strapped team under owner Michael Jordan.

If Dampier clears waivers by Friday as expected, he would become a free agent who could sign with any team -- likely at a drastic pay cut.

Dampier, 35, told The Miami Herald on Tuesday that he does not yet have a clear preference, but said he was impressed with the Heat's offseason moves to re-sign Dwyane Wade and add LeBron James and Chris Bosh.

``They have some good, young talent down there and can do a lot of big things,'' Dampier said. ``Obviously, I want to be in a situation to compete for a championship. I haven't talked to my agent yet, so we'll go from there. But I've kept myself in good shape for 14 years, and still feel like I can play the game at a high level.''

NICE, see you failed to mention the next person most hated is Lebron. An oversight? I think not. At least Kobe has 5 rings to hang that on.

Report: Dampier, Miami Heat to meet

By Barry Jackson
bjackson@MiamiHerald.com

Already with four centers under contract, the Heat plans to visit this week with free agent Erick Dampier, according to a published report.

The Houston Chronicle reported that Dampier worked out with the Rockets on Monday and will do so again Tuesday, and then fly to Miami to meet with the Heat.

Dampier, 36, averaged 6.0 points and 7.3 rebounds in 55 games for Dallas last season.

He was released by the Charlotte Bobcats, who did not want to pay his $13 million salary.

The Heat could offer Dampier the $1.4 million veteran's minimum or a two-year deal worth $2.8 million.

The Rockets have offered a two-year, $4 million deal. They're looking for help at center after learning that Yao Ming -- who missed last season with a foot injury -- will be limited to no more than 24 minutes per game and not play on the second half of back-to-back games.

Before Dampier became available, Joel Anthony appeared to be the front-runner to start for the Heat, with Zydrunas Ilgauskas in line for regular minutes. Jamaal Magloire and rookie Dexter Pittman also are under contract, and coach Erik Spolestra has said starting power forward Chris Bosh will be used some at center, and possibly Juwan Howard, as well.

But Dampier might emerge as the starting center if he signs.

Atlanta reportedly also has shown interest.
