Or Alex Smith wants money they feel he is not worth or that would make it impossible to put a roster around him (or both). It also would be classic Chiefs to pay a high price so they can "restore the roar" and get butts in seats again, even if nothing of importance (like, you know, a playoff win) comes of it. But at least the parking lot was rocking again...

Im starting to think the plan was to get back to respectability to get the heat off of Clark and then rebuild the team. They just happened to luck into playing a bunch of backup QBs and expectations were higher then they planned.

Condon has a history of going for the money and not listening to his clients wishes.
The most recent is the Peyton Manning contract. Where Manning gave Condon a figure that he didn't want to go over, yet Condon went over it anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if that is not the case right now as well. After the whole Manning/49er contract thing last time I am not sure I would have retained his services after that mess.

This is starting to look more and more like the most probable scenario.

I don't know their roster all that well, but do/did the Broncos have 5 players with contracts that are paying them 10 mil a year or damn close when they signed Manning to that contract?

Next closest salary is around $3 million. And that's with Manning carrying a $15 million dollar salary. It looks like Dumervil and Bailey both were making $10 million+ when Manning was signed.

It just scrolled on nfln that the Chiefs will franchise tag Alex Smith next year if they can't get a long term deal done...then said he wants to be paid like a top tier quarterback.

I think it's more likely that they were surprised at how quickly things turned around last year. No one plans to take a 2 win team and the next year, win the first 9 games and finish 11-5. I'll bet they thought getting last years team to .500 would be a good first year. The only thing that looks rebuildy about this offseason is that they weren't active in FA, but when Dorsey said before the season last year, that his philosophy was to build from within, and that the activity and turnover was an aberration and not the norm moving forward, this offseason seems to be in keeping with the plan. I buy that more than last season being a big plan to cover a rebuild. |

It certainly has not. However, the Cheating Donx have been known to follow a different set of salary cap rules...

No, they lost Dumervil to the Ravens last season.
