Nah, it's just that they're the most vocal.

Look at the Romo/ Rivers thread. You can't really come out and talk reasonably about it, like KC Connection is doing, because the same people fervently attack you on it.

While it may not apply to YOU, it certainly has existed for as long as I've been a poster here.

With that said, I've been pleased with Smith's play of late, and it appears he'll end up right around where I expected him to - 3500/25.

That's good enough to win in the regular season - we'll find out soon enough if it's enough to win when it matters.
This place is critical of everything.

But to act as though it is disproportionately Alex Smith fans isn't fair at all. I would say Smith fans, by and large, are more supportive of guys like Rivers and Manning. Granted, this belief is supposition as much as yours is, but I wouldn't purport to castigate a viewpoint based on it either.

Good enough to win in the regular season is better than what 1/2 the league has and something we've had two, maybe three times, since 1975. Baby steps here, fellas. Would I like to have a guy like Rodgers? Of course I would, but that doesn't mean I have to shit all over the pretty solid QB we presently have.

If he loses in the first round, Alex Smith doesn't suddenly suck. He's still an average to slightly above average QB (and outstanding game manager) that gave us a hell of a season. If we make it all the way to the SB, Alex Smith isn't suddenly a God - he's still an outstanding game manager and slightly above average QB.

His track record means more than the outcome of a single game, but the guys that want to be right about him know that the odds pretty strongly favor a playoff loss and want to put more weight on something that is far more team dependent and shorter term in evaluating the long term value of an individual. That doesn't make a damn bit of sense.

With what we paid, we should get 4,000/30 and the ability to keep the defense honest with downfield passing.

Based on his history, don't see it happening.
So, to sum up:

3500/25 is not unrealistic.

Didn't see 4000/30 happening.

I'd say I pretty much nailed it.

With the 2 defenses we play the next 2 weeks, I don't think 4000 total yards and 30 TD's is out of the question.

Unlikely, but not completely out of the question.

I'm actually predicting shootouts with INDY and SD though
With him not even going over 300 in either game it could put AS at 3700 and 29 TDs. Passing. That doesn't even count the other 400+ yards on the ground.

I can't speak for others, but losing in the first round doesn't mean he sucks.

It just means he's the average to above average QB you think he is, but isn't good enough to win a championship with.

Some folks are perfectly content with winning a bunch of regular season games, but some have loftier goals, and realize that you're not guaranteed this opportunity every year.

I don't think it's unfair to expect the QB of a team that started 9-0, who we spent two R2 picks on - one of them as high as you can get - to win a single playoff game.

Well, if he can continue to throw for 275/5 without throwing more than 5 passes more than 5 yards downfield, then it's certainly not out of the question - though that type of performance doesn't exactly answer any questions the "doubters" may still have.

I'm fine with Smith until he proves us otherwise. When the time does arise to find a new QB I'd much prefer they draft the next one and not grab one in FA like they've done since forever.

Yes, because thats how he's played the last 4 or 5 games?

If he replicates his SD game twice (unlikely as I said) thats roughly 600 yards and 6 TD's.

Again, it's probably unlikely to happen, but against the 2 defenses we are about to face, I wouldn't say it's impossible.

This is again a straw man so many people create so they have nice easy arguments to make.

No, your goals aren't any 'loftier' than the folks that are pleased about an 11+ win season. We just recognize that sometimes reality intervenes and there's a pretty scarce supply of HoF quarterbacks available. We realize that only one team wins the SB every year and many others don't for reasons that have nothing to do with their Qb.

It's haughty bullshit. You believe yourselves to be more critical fans because 'we demand excellence', as though the rest of us aren't seeking the same. We'll always want the best QB we can get. The problem is that many of you just make the same wails every year "WE NEED A FRANCHISE QB!!!!" as though there's an infinite supply of them and/or everyone isn't out there trying to get one. It's a zero sum league where everyone is ruthlessly trying to beat everyone else. It's not as simple as just strolling to the QBMart and grabbing Andrew Luck.

You can be happy to have Alex Smith without being content in having an above average QB. You can enjoy winning 10-13 games in a season and still be pissed off that we didn't win a SB.

These are not the mutually exclusive ideas you so constantly paint them as in order to create an easy argument.
