Most Overrated Actor & Actresses

Rainman brought up an idea in the other thread that I felt was poignant enough to deserve a thread of it's own, namely who is the top three to five most overrated actors/actresses?

Here's my list right off the top of my head:

The Gentlemen:

1. Nicholas Cage
- One great movie (Raising Arizona, which was probably due more to who the directors were versus the acting capabilities of Cage) and couple of mediocre ones (Moonstruck, Vampire's Kiss) and a giant pile of dog shit. And I'm sorry, but Leaving Las Vegas is a stupid movie, with Cage doing his standard over the top schtick and nothing else. Maybe the worst performance by an actor that actually earned an Academy Award. (Remember, this is the same Academy that gave Gladiator the Best Picture award.)

2. Samuel L. Jackson
- One great role (Pulp Fiction) and that's about it. Yell much Sam?

3. Tom Hanks
- Bachelor Party might have saved him from this list if not for the slew of the Hanks/Meg Ryan (see below) films. Perhaps the world has yearned for a new Spencer Tracy/Katharine Hepburn pairing, but this wasn't it. Same guy in every single movie. Same facial expressions, same acting style. Big? Overrated. Philadelphia? Overrated. The serendipitous Forrest Gump was okay as a novelty, but indicates that Hanks best role is playing a halfwit.

4. Kevin Costner
- Talk about the same guy in every single role (other than 3000 miles to Graceland, in which he plays the anti-hero bastard son of Elvis Presley). If you've seen one Costner movie, you've pretty much seen them all.

5. Al Pacino
- Yeah, the gangstas all love Scarface, but let's be honest - other than Serpico, has Al really done anything of any merit other than play the same role for every single character - and that one character was based on his performance in Dog Day Afternoon, which might have been a decent movie if it didn't spawn 1001 other Al Pacino characters just like it? HOOOOOOOOHAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

The Ladies:

1. Julia Roberts
- I mean, how much more can a single, mile wide smile and forced laugh take a person?

2. Meg Ryan
- The same goofy, feel good, childish persona in every single movie.

3. Catherine Zeta-Jones
- This Welsh siren got over on looks alone for far too long. A modern day equivalent to Ann Margaret without Ann's talent and sassiness.

4. Angelina Jolie
- How in the hell does she have two Oscars and five Golden Globe Awards? I mean, really. Have they actually seen her movies? (Although, Shelly Winters has an Oscar, so I'm assuming that the award has little to zero merit in recognizing actual acting ability.)

5. Cameron Diaz
- Four Golden Globes and unquestionably her best work is as Princess Fiona in Shrek. Her list of movies stretch across the artistic canvas like a skunk dragging his ass for seven miles trying to work off a wet dingleberry.

As Good as it Gets is also a more recent role that is really unique. It's not like he always plays the same guy.

Versatile in what way? That he's the same guy in every film versatile? That he pussed out and didn't lay pipe to that really hot chick in Bachelor Party versatile? That his character in SPR, Gilligan's Island (and seriously, like anyone would miss a jumbo jet going down anywhere outside of Neptune?), every Meg Ryan movie (*puke*), and whathaveyou, is anything other than the same exact guy? Oh noes! OVERRATED!

Did you work really hard trying to think that one up?

I bet you're a Moulin Rouge fan. That might be ok if you're a girl. Otherwise you may be queer and not even know it yet.

Some of the biggest box office earners are guys who can't act.

They are who they are, and you either like them or you don't.

John Wayne couldn't act, no question.

He's an American Icon, though, because men wanted to be him, and women wanted their men to be like him.

While I'm thrilled that someone else finally agrees that Al Pacino's been doing the same thing since Godfather, Tom Hanks??? Really???

Tom Hanks is probably the best actor working in film. He takes on incredibly diverse roles, he made a film with him and a volleyball watchable, he can do comedy, action, drama, and he's won two oscars.

Big was amazing, Philadelphia was amazing, Forrest Gump is possibly one of the best films ever made.

Don't forget, he was in Dragnet AND Turner and Hooch. And who among us didn't enjoy both of those immensely?

Take the piss out of Nic Cage and the others all you want (Personally I think he chooses the worst scripts in the world so very often; why can't he just do The Rock, Lord of War, and Matchstick Men every six months?) but Tom Hanks is hardly over-rated. I can understand that you're holding Angels and Demons against him but come on.
