I have no memory of watching rented movies in high school. My family didn't get a VCR until after I moved out of the house in '83. Probably took that industry a while to make it to the wilds of Kirksville.

My family didn't own a VCR until around 84 or 85, but I remember a friend had one a year or so before we did. The first movies he rented were Poltergiest and Star Trek II in the summer of 83.

Star Trek II was the first rented movie I ever saw. Watched it over at some kid's house whose name I dont' even remember. I rewound and watched the battle scenes over and over - it was amazing.

But I didn't see a VCR in somebody's home until probably '82 or so, and it was my friend who's dad is a doctor. They didn't start coming down in price until around '84 IIRC. I believe I got my first VCR in '85.
Ya, my parents got a Betamax as a wedding present in 1979. It was like $ 2,000. They had a camcorder too for it. Its a shame VHS/ VCR won out over Beta because the video quality was really so much better, but as I understand Beta just never got the traction due to high price point while VCR player prices dropped in price and the market pushed that as adoption as the default format.

I remember Peaches- on 75th & Metcalf was one of the few spots that carried a large selection of Beta movies to rent. Pretty cool music & movie store - and if I remember correctly they had a machine you could pick a variety of songs to create your own mix cd - way ahead of its time and never caught on & that was prob. a good decade before cd burners even started to become a consumer product.
