Matt Cassel reportedly losing support among Chiefs

Matt Cassel reportedly losing support among Chiefs

With four subpar games under his belt, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel is catching heat for the team's ugly 1-3 start.

Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reported the fourth-year starter is "losing confidence from players and many others in the organization." If Kansas City had someone more intriguing than Brady Quinn at the No. 2 spot, Cassel would be destined for the bench, according to Cole.

"Look, there's a big reason why they went after Peyton Manning as hard as they did this offseason," Cole was told by a source with knowledge of team president Scott Pioli's thinking. "What you're seeing from Cassel is pretty much what was expected. He's a really nice backup, not a starter."

Cassel has struggled with just five touchdowns against seven interceptions. His 70.4 quarterback rating exceeds only that of Mark Sanchez, Ryan Tannehill, Brandon Weeden and Jay Cutler.

Chants for Quinn and third-string sensation Ricky Stanzi bubbled up at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday during the Chiefs' 37-20 loss to the San Diego Chargers, but a switch at quarterback would require Pioli to admit defeat after years of insisting Cassel, his personal pick under center, had the goods. Cassel's 19-24 record has frustrated fans, as have his struggles against some of the league's weaker defenses this season. Cassel littered the field with three interceptions in Sunday's loss, but Romeo isn't budging.

"I could have taken (running back Jamaal) Charles out because of his struggles and his problems, but he's also the one who can run for a touchdown," Crennel said. "(Those are) some of the decisions a head coach has to make and you have to go with your gut feeling, and what you know about your team and then move forward with it."

What Crennel also knows about his team is that inserting Quinn into the starting role won't solve a larger problem in Kansas City. With young talent on both sides of the ball, the Chiefs were an enticing pick in the AFC West before the season. Finding out you don't have a quarterback, however, tugs the entire operation back to square one.

That's a good question. Where is Zorn? I don't recall seeing him on the sidelines working with Cassel and evaluating situations and massaging his calves and guiding his thought processes and preparing his psyche for the next series.

Someone here told a story that when Zorn first arrived he put a trash can in the back corner of the endzone and had the quarterbacks stand at the 20 and try to throw passes into the trash can. Of the three QB’s, IIRC they were Cassel, Thigy and Brokey, the only one that could make the throw was Zorn.

Zorn has only been here since last year. It would have had to have been Cassel, Palko and Stanzi.

Ah, thought I was off on that. Thanks.
If I could remember who posted it I'd go dig up the quote but all I remember is reading that during the offseason and having the same reaction notorious had.

The D was terrible, but that was par for the course for Trent Green.

The offense DID turn it over on 3 consecutive possessions. Even if the defense plays well you don't usually win if you do something that stupid.

I don't know what our record would be with Trent, but I can assure you the offense wouldn't be embarrassing itself every week.

I think the defense has turned the page on this team, but you can't expect them to be a team that will stop the other guys if they get a consistent short field.
