Riskiest Things You've Ever Said to a Cop?

"Your eyes look pretty red, son... you been smoking dope?"

"Your eyes look pretty glazed, officer... you been eating donuts?"

---

Another time a cop pulled me over and asked me if I was texting... I told him, "No... I was tweeting."

Gosh, this is a tough one. Mine would probably something along the lines of "BACK OFF, YOU M**********R! BACK OFF OR I'LL BLOW THIS WOMAN'S HEAD OFF! OUTSIDE THE BUILDING! DO I LOOK LIKE I'M KIDDING! LOOK AT WHAT'S STRAPPED TO MY CHEST! IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE THIS HOSTAGE'S BRAINS ALL OVER YOU, BACK OFF! AND I WANT A HELICOPTER! NOW, M**********R! NOW!"

Teenage years. Sometimes I wonder how we come out of them as normal adults.

Fort Worth has had issues about arrests being pushed into different parts of the city or people being let go for crimes to massage crime stats. I have an intimate knowledge of what has happened at KCPD since the late 80's and know that similar things have happened there.

I never said there weren't dangerous situations in policing. The profession as a whole is not exceptionally dangerous.

The newspaper went in depth and discovered that a large group of patrol officers ran plates on women at a rate of 15-1 vs men. The men were cited at a high rate and 80% of the women were never stopped at all but were followed. Leading to the conclusion That the cops were using their data base to get names/addresses/phone numbers of citizens.

It's the age old question: "Who is watching the watchers"?
Haha, I love the way you quoted my post. I have been tl;dr-happy lately. Anyways, that is some crazy, crazy statistic, especially considering more men tend to be cited than women.

It doesn't surprise me. One time when I was in college, I was dating this girl and got pulled over for going 37 in a 25. She was in the passenger seat with me. In our interaction, I was cordial..wasn't being disrespectful at all. At least, I wasn't intending to come off that way. However, this guy was being an absolute dick to me. Just being an asinine, smart-ass prick with every one of his responses. He told me he had to go to his car and told me to wait for him. As soon as he walked off I looked at my then girlfriend and was like, "well this sucks. I am FOR SURE going to get a ticket...and he probably won't even lower my speed on the ticket. Man, that guy was a dick!" I was speculating an unexpected hit on my checking account.

He came back and said to me, "I am giving you a warning...derp-derp-derp." I couldn't believe it considering how rude the guy was to me. I didn't think there was a chance in hell that I would get off with a warning.

ANYWAYS, that night, that same cop initiated a conversation with my then girlfriend on AOL Instant Messenger. Not only did he ask her to hang out with him, but he also stooped to the level of insulting me, with the primary belittling at my expense being the car I was driving at the time, which was a 1991 Chevy Cavalier (I loved that thing as shitty as it was). He kept referring to me as "loser Cavalier boy." She showed me the conversation. I couldn't believe it. Well, I could believe it, but it was just...WTF-ish.

"Son do you know why I'm stopping you for"
Cause I'm young and I'm black and my hat's real low
Do I look like a mind reader sir, I don't know
Am I under arrest or should I guess some more?

"Well you was doing fifty-five in a fifty-four
License and registration and step out of the car
Are you carrying a weapon on you? I know a lot of you are"

I ain't stepping out of shit, all my paper's legit

"Well, do you mind if I look around the car a little bit?"

Well, my glove compartment is locked, so is the trunk in the back
And I know my rights, so you gon' need a warrant for that

"Aren't you sharp as a tack
You some type of lawyer or something
Somebody important or something"

Well, I ain't passed the bar but I know a little bit
Enough that you won't illegally search my shit

"Well we'll see how smart you are when the K9 come"

I got 99 problems, but a bitch ain't one, hit me

Here is the incident that really tainted my view toward the police. I may not remember all of the details but....

About 5 years ago when my oldest son was 16, we got a call around 3am. The police had him pulled over on Lane Street, just off of 10th. So we go over there and talk to the cop. He's got my son and a friend or two in the back seat of his patrol car. The cop proceeds to tell us that he had to pull him over. The cop said my son had admitted to having a shot at a friend's house just a few blocks away but that he was going to let him off on that count since he wasn't really drunk. But he said he would have to ticket him for a couple of other things. He also mentioned something about marijuana seeds in the ash tray or something like that.

Now before I go on I should say that I'm not one of those parents who believes their kid is an angel and never does anything wrong. My son was a pretty good kid but he did some of the same type of things that many of us had done at that age. Never had gotten into trouble with the law, though. I also knew that he had tried MJ once but didn't like it. His thing was booze. I knew this because we had frank talks about this. So I just assumed that the mj belonged to one of his friends.

The cop was nice enough to let my wife and myself take him home. Of course, I had to drive the car home. And I'll be damned if the stupid thing wouldn't start. It had been having problems with the battery or alternator. So we had to jump start it. Yay! Anyway, he didn't give my son a ticket for the alleged mj seeds but if I recall, there was something in his report about it. He wrote a ticket that had 5 counts, I believe, and sent us on our way.

I didn't realize at the time but 2 of them were NOT minor traffic violations. One count was for wreckless driving and one was for eluding (the police). The next few days I started to question all of these charges. They didn't make any sense. First, the alleged mj in the ash tray was not there. My son had been working up to get his license for several weeks prior to this. So, I had driven this car that we had bought for him to work sometimes. I had smoked a cigar in it and there were cigar ashes in the ash tray. I assume that's what he thought was evidence of mj. So, there was the first item that was questionable.

We sat my son down and had a long discussion. Of course, as parents we were not happy with him getting into trouble in this way. And he was punished for it. At the same time, he was insistent that he didn't do the things the cop claimed. Again, we're not parents that think lil Johnny is an angel. But there are those times that you want to believe your child and feel that he is being truthful.

Not to mention that the charges against him didn't add up. His car was a 1989 Honda Accord with 170k miles on it. The cop claimed he was speeding in excess of 60 mph in order to elude him. From 7th and Washburn, up Lincoln to 10th st. The cop also reported that he ran a stop sign at 7th and Lincoln and blew through the stop sign at 8th & Lincoln. At a high rate of speed. In his 1989 Honda Accord with 170k miles. This just didn't sound plausible.

Those 2 serious charges could have meant loss of license, a huge insurance increase (or drop), and possibly even jail time.

We got a lawyer. We told the lawyer that yes, our son wasn't completely innocent in this matter but we felt that these other charges were trumped up. We weren't gonna stand idly by while this cop tried to railroad our son.

During the weeks leading up to the court date, it seemed that our lawyer wasn't all that interested. It didn't seem like he was doing much. By the time we met with him day of (or was it the day before?) the court date, he had a new piece of evidence. Apparently, he had a buddy at the Highway Patrol that was able to get a copy of the radio dispatch call of this traffic stop and it showed that my son pulled over right as soon as the cop turned on his siren (which was on 10th street right before Lane).

I'll give this lawyer credit. Leading up to the court date, I didn't know if he was up to the task. But once he got the cop on the stand he shredded him and his BS story and trumped up charges. He showed that my son did not run a stop sign at 7th and Lincoln because the picture I had provided of that intersection showed that there was no stop sign at that intersection. Also, an expert had said that little car would have bottomed out if he had tried to blow through the stop sign at 8th and Lincoln, not to mention that little 4 cylinder POS car was not likely to have been able to get up to the speeds claimed by the cop in the short of a distance. And lastly, the radio dispatch of the incident proved that the cop didn't even try to pull him over until several blocks later than the alleged start of the alleged chase.

After all of this the judge knew the charges were bunk and said as much. So, the judge said he had no choice but to drop all of the charges. All of them. Even though a couple of them were legit and we didn't even try to fight them.

My wife and I were relieved and as we were walking out the cop mumbled something about we had a good lawyer. Well, yeah that's true. But it's too bad that we had to go through this whole ordeal simply because a cop was abusing his power. A life lesson, I guess. Now I realize that not all cops are like this and I still treat them with respect. But I also realize that there are plenty out there nowadays that are at differing degrees of being corrupt.

I had another cop who pulled me over and acted like a total prick to me. He was in my grade and from a rival high school...and I happened to be in his hometown/rival school when I was pulled over. We knew of each other. He probably knew of me through wrestling, I knew of him because it was a small-town area and our dads went to day-care together growing up. I was unaware that he didn't like me until he pulled me over that night. Just acted like a total douche. Even gave me shit for being from the town/high school that I was from.

This guy wrote me a ticket...45 in a 35. Evidently, he only worked as a cop for 6 months or so prior to being demoted to jailor/dispatcher due to so many complaints about him.

Long story short, a year or two later, this guy shot his son in front of his girlfriend, shot the family dog in front of his girlfriend, shot her and then shot himself. No joke. Google the name, "Kirk Massey." Some of the creepiest shit ever.

He is buried in the same obscure cemetery where my family plots are reserved. Every time I visit my grandparents/relatives' graves, I always check his gravestone out. Engraved is a picture of him as a child...and the usual gravestone stuff...a quote and what not. I always find his grave interesting because there are always some interesting things that people place on or beside his gravestone...hate letters, empty beer cans, empty shot-gun shells, etc. Some crazy shit.

I can't speak for other states when it comes to ticket stats. The highway patrol may have one, don't have any ohp friends. In a month I may write ten or so tickets, if that. Most of them are driving under suspension. Which a city ticket for that, keeps it off your driving record.

As long as you're not being a dickhead, I try and help you out. Keeping something off your driving record, making you pour your beer out instead of a ticket, making you dump a small amount of weed out, etc. It's those other select few that you want to punch in the throat. That's why some officers lose their cool and go overboard.

Should I have reported the guy who was excessively tailing my wife or the guy who let me off of the ticket, but proceeded to add my girlfriend to AOL Instant Messenger to ask her out and belittle the shit out of me? Or both?

Speaking of the AIM, Chevy Cavalier hating, belittling cop, he made headlines a few years ago because one of our region's most notorious criminals had made a threat to this girl this cop was dating while in a class at the local junior college. The guy who made the threat was ONLY there to satisfy his parole officer. Besides the point. Anyways, this cop lost his shit when this took place and while off duty he barged into the school and beat the shit out of this dude who made the threat towards the girl. The guy ended up being injured and sued for $70k. Our region was in an uproar...people were SO pissed that this notorious repeat offender actually won a lawsuit for that large amount of money. There were tons of letters to the editor in our area newspaper following that situation. The cop was suspended for a couple months or so.

There were tons of letters to the editor in our area newspaper following that situation. The cop was suspended for a couple months or so.
The AOL one. It'd be easier to sweep the tailing thing under the rug.

As long as you're not being a dickhead, I try and help you out. Keeping something off your driving record, making you pour your beer out instead of a ticket, making you dump a small amount of weed out, etc. It's those other select few that you want to punch in the throat. That's why some officers lose their cool and go overboard.
You seem like a pretty cool cop. We have a couple cops like that in our area. In fact, we had what seemed to be a token area African American cop (I believe he is an investigator now). Fast dude. Anyways, he was like that. Real cool, accommodating, understanding and cordial. I ran into him at a bar last Summer and he SWORE up and down to me that he is real good, longtime buddies with Will Shields.
