Is it just me or...

Does it seem that Dorsey is trying to build for a run after the Manning era ends in Denver?

Not really.

It seems like he's trying to replace expensive talent with cheaper-yet-equal talent...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Why the hell should we assume we are just going to let our best players walk? We're not the freaking Royals.

In reality with the other teams in the conference as well as our division thats a pretty smart way of doing things. There is absolutely no point in mortgaging the future now, to have a slim chance at beating out the Broncos. This imo is something that neither Carl nor Pioli did. The guy is going to draft much like the packers do and draft some replacements for the older players. I think mostly though he sticks to his board. Hes simply not all in.

It seems to me that the only exception to this philosophy is the Alex Smith trade, realistically it was a smart trade. Get a player who can give us a shot at winning a championship, while giving the franchise some stability going forward. Im guessing Hunt probably played a big roll in the trade, as he likely demanded wins now. Really its a bargain of a trade if Smith continues to play the way he did in the later part of the season. The other thing is that quarterbacks seem to be playing much longer now. I can see Alex potentially playing for another 5 seasons so long as he continues to play at a high level. i do however believe that they will not hesitate to replace him should he falter.

It really is the packer mold of building a team. I completely expect a 1st round qb in the next couple of years with a qb being picked up in the later rounds most drafts. We aren't going to over spend on replaceable players, nor will we spend heavy in free agency. Dorsey will continue to work on building a consistently competitive team through the draft.

We can only hope that he manages to hit on a qb in the future, or that Alex Smith continues to grow so that we have a legitimate shot at a championship with this group of players. I think it is a real positive however that Dorsey isnt already all in behind Alex. He's playing a wait and see approach that i think is far better in the long run.
The Packer roster isn't really all that great.
They've won a SB, and been a consistent playoff participant for the last 5 years for one reason.

Aaron Rodgers.

Without Rodgers, they are just a mediocre team that misses the playoffs as often as they make them.

You are thinking of players that have been hit with the franchise tag.

No, I think you are confusing the franchise tag where the tag has to be signed and negotiated into an extension before a certain date.

It just sucks that this franchise has just wasted about 6-7 years in some of these players careers ****ing around w/ the QB position, front office BS not getting along w/ coaches etc. It's really laughable childish shit this team has gone through.

Now players like Bowe, DJ hali and Flowers are in the twilights of their careers. Need Bowe and DJ's replacements. Hopefully this Gaines kid proves to be good.
Not that I disagree completely, but tons of top guys come and go on teams that don't make any noise in the postseason. Other awesome players come in and you hope they're around to win something during their playing days.

Point is in the games you're not giving him credit for, he made the plays to win. Taking into consideration that the Chiefs had a different philosophy before the bye week, he played well in most games.

1st year in a new system, team and guys he's throwing to. Let's not forget the numerous drops. The play last year has plenty of variables but it doesn't mean shit with the exception of simply looking at his play going forward- is he trending up or down?

It's amazing how Dorsey AND Reid - who's had a stiffy for Alex for a while, are less qualified in making a decision on trading for Smith than the some resident CP Kiper wannabes.

Those who are not a Smith fan can't hide from the fact that he stepped up and performed well in the Playoff game. Now the bitching and moaning has moved on to speculation at best about how the club will overpay and kill our salary cap- even though the front office hasn't been rash to quickly get him extended. So, all the vitriol is just hypothetical butthurt. They've also brought in a new QB in the 2 years they've been here, so it's not like Pioli , who refused to bring in any competition to push Cassel. You can not like Bray or Murray, but it isn't like they are not looking forward with respect to the QB position and right now it looks more and more like they may wait and see how Alex does next year before sinking starting money into keeping him past next season. Which I have little doubt will result in people around here criticizing Dorsey for being stupid for not signing Smith earlier at a better bargain if he does play well next year. Basically, it's a catch 22, and some are going to find a way to bitch about something no matter what the situation.

Justin isn't going anywhere, and I doubt Berry will either unless he simply wants out of KC.

That presumes that no one signs an extension before the FA next year.

Some will throw up numbers and comparisons to other QB's, but I believe Smith "fans" at heart are those who have suffered through everyone post-Gannon and are happy to see something resembling game and competence.

By far the best.

Even the Kneel Smith/DT combo was a better front 7 than (no Houston) today...
