It was just an example of working around something ingrained. It didn't prevent them from adopting the rest of the system.

Very little gain in the world you operate in, perhaps. But if you're a multinational corporation, it would make your life alot simpler. I generally favor making international trade easier.

If they could convince us American men we could talk about our penises in millimeters, they would have a shot

I clicked on their link for why there is less war. I only agree with point #2. There's studies that contradict there other claims.

My flight to Calgary on my last trip was delayed and I arrived about 10:00pm. Got my rental and headed to the hotel. I glanced at the speedo, saw 140 and slammed on the brakes in the middle of the highway. Thankfully, no one hit me, but a cop saw it happen and pulled me over.
"Oh. American, eh?"

Using countries to show how big Africa is kinda stupid.
They do realize that Africa is a continent and not a country, right? |

It's not that, it's that they purposely make Africa look smaller to scale on maps and globes. If you look at the standard globe you wouldn't be able to fit those countries

The main reason we win all of those Olympic medals is that we're running the 100-yard dash while other countries are running the 100-meter dash.
Someone can correct me on this, but I suspect that a lot of engineering already uses metric. I know that when I was in college 25+ years ago we did it both ways, but the metric way was much easier to deal with. For most professions I don't think we'd see much difference. There'd be big impacts on construction and various production sectors, but the production stuff would just be one-time changes. Would there be changes to the size of a gallon of milk, for example, or does it really matter? Would cans of corn no longer come in a 16 oz. size? I don't know, but it really doesn't matter if we change or not, other than a one-time retooling of a lot of machinery. Construction would be a big deal, I would think, because it involves maintaining existing structures. If plywood starts coming in 1 meter sizes instead of four-foot sizes, that mucks up a lot of things. Maintenance of existing buildings becomes harder, and you would even have to do things like change the spacing of studs and joists. But I imagine that we'd have a 30-year period of stocking both and over time the metric would eventually become the larger part of the market. In Colorado, it would wreak havoc on mountain climbing hobbies. The big thing around here are the "Fourteeners", the peaks that are above 14,000 feet. If you changed that to the "4kers" in terms of meters, it would probably multiple the number of peaks by a factor of 10 or more, and there are no 5kers. In other everyday life, who cares. If my car speedometer has a different scale on it, I still just look to see if my number matches the number on the sign. The only downside is that you'd probably have to do double signs for 20 years or so until the English-system cars die off. Do they do that now anyway, at least on highways? I don't recall.

That's what I thought
then I realize that no motive for cartographic racism exists
