HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)

EDIT: Changed the original header to mark this as the thread where spoilers are allowed (but not necessarily recommended...). Created a new, spoiler-free thread for Ice and Fire virgins...

This is awesome...

Huge, Huge News

Nov. 11th, 2008 at 10:29 PM

HBO has given the production order.

They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.

It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.

It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.

More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.

Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.

Damn I can't believe that Jory was killed. ****!

Also, why was Jamie all like, "Take him alive and kill his men," and then he killed all his men, and Ned got stabbed in the leg and then he didn't even take Ned. That sort of pissed me off.

Also I really ****ing hope they got that gay shit out of the way. There was a gay storyline on True Blood last year that ran almost the whole season and it really pissed me off.

The line about take him alive and kill his men was because if he killed Ned then Tyrion was dead meat. When he left with Ned injured, it is pretty much a given that the guys all around him could take care of the taking part. It will most likely take up next week with right there for the most part.

Jaime knew Ned was going nowhere after the spear through the leg. The point was to keep him in King's Landing, which the wound accomplished.

In the book, Ned is riding and Jamie or one of his men cut the horse down so the horse lands on Ned's leg, crushing it. Same basic result although in the book it was more gruesome.

I really enjoyed the Ned vs. Jaime scene. In the books, Martin never really tells us much about Ned's prowess as a warrior. I always thought he came across more as a crafty war leader who was an average swordsman.

This portrayal of Ned Stark makes me believe he could go toe-to-toe with Ser Arthur Dayne and walk away alive (and whole).

The Mountain vs. The Hound was pretty badass, too...

There were two timing elements that were very well done in the Hound/Mountain fight. First, the swing at Loras that Hound sweeps in to repel. Then at the very end when the Hound kneels to the king and Gregor's sword goes right over his head.

For me it is starting to get difficult to track all of the different names as they are discussed. Which illegitimate kid belongs to who etc. etc. Still very much enjoying the series but it is starting to show that they are trying to cover several books worth of ground in a limited space.

If it makes you feel any better, it's kind of hard to follow in the books as well.

Yes, so?
*edit* I see your point I think. If limiting to the first season I would have said trying to cram several hundred pages into a few episodes.

Actually that does make me feel better. On a side note I've taken to calling my boys dothraki dogs when they are rough housing. My wife laughs.

Yeah, I commented on this earlier on one of these threads. The book is 3 times as long as the first Sookie Stackhouse book, yet their season is an episode shorter than True Blood's. That's got to be really difficult as a writer and/or producer.

I'd like to hope for longer seasons going forward, but it's a really expensive show at just a dozen.

Inevitably some strong parts of the story will hit the cutting room floor and some plot disconnect will occur.
In a way I'm glad I haven't read the books yet. This way I'll be pleased with the parts I didn't see in the series instead of noticing they are missing.
OTOH you who have read the books are getting more form the tv than I am, at least on first pass.

The brother-sister f****** is damn hard to get past whether on tv or page.

Honestly, the TV show is a lot harder to get past for me than the books, even when the content is the same. Maybe I'm just a visual person, but I can deal with "the six year old kid was sucking on his mom's tit" on the page (paraphrasing obviously), but seeing it on the screen made me cringe a bit.

It can be hard to see on some of it, I agree, but I am glad they didn't try to gloss over that aspect. I guess I would rather they err on the side of Loras sucking off Renly to not leave some of the hinted at things in the book than to try to paint a tamer version of some of the characters that clearly have serious flaws about them.

I abhorred the Loras stuff at first, but the more I have thought on it, if it is hinted at in the books, as it has been, then I'd just assume clear things up now and paint them for who they are right away. I do hope that they do some things to show the Loras that is a great knight in skill instead of lancing in the bedroom.
