Raiders Trade for Carson Palmer
Per Rotoworld, the Raiders are close to acquiring Carson Palmer.

On my phone, so no link, but what the hell do the Raiders have left to trade?

Palmer will be better than Campbell once he gets into shape, assuming he can avoid injury. The Raiders were desperate. Boller is crap and their current season would be squandered if they did not get at least a mediocre QB. Desperate people overpay, especially when they are desperate and there is no time left before the trading deadline. No doubt Oakland overpaid, by a lot.

Yet, they won't feel the pain of overpaying for a while. They will be competitive with Palmer this season and next, if he stays healthy. It won't be for a few years that they will feel the loss of two top draft picks. They decided to play for today and not tomorrow. That is the philosophy of the Redskins and Dan Snyder. It is why the Redskins have been mired in mediocrity for over a decade, even when they sign every big name free agent to make up for traded away draft picks.

In contrast, teams like the Patriots and Steelers build their teams through the draft. They have continuing success without sacrificing the future. The Raider fans are about to feel the pain of the Redskins fans. When Al Davis was determining draft picks, they could afford to give up first round picks because he was apt to squander them on speedsters anyway. But now, those picks could be key.

So, the Raiders gain in the short term and it gives them reason to dream that Palmer could be another Gannon or Plunkett. After the JaMarcus Russell debacle, one can understand their pining for even a mediocre QB. But, at the end of the day, they overpaid greatly and the true costs of this may not be apparent unless Palmer is injured or melts down.

Many fans would take a 10-6 team in the current year over the probability of having a 12-4 sort of team in a couple of years. That is what the Raider fan base is likely getting. As the Redskins have shown, 10-6 is the best you can expect from a team that does not build through the draft.
