Fourteen goddamned baserunners in 4.2 innings. That is a special kind of suck, Jaime.

Thank you for being historically awful, Reds bullpen.

Everything.

My hope is that they leverage the draft pool to take a tough sign with their first pick. Maybe punt a bit on 33 and 34, take that pool allotment and grab a guy that's probably a top 10 talent at 23 demanding over slot. Then use the 33 and 34 picks on college players with a single solid identifiable skill (DeJong is the mold here, but ideally a slightly more accomplished version of him).

The system is just so bereft of impact players and they've been so poor supplementing it with high end international guys that I think they need to be extremely aggressive with their bonus pool this year. I've not done much digging on prospects this year so I couldn't tell you who I'd prefer, but honestly, position doesn't really matter. There's nowhere on the diamond where there's a huge, unfillable hole, nor is there anywhere that they have a player who's so obviously ensconced for the next several years that you don't look to replace them.

What I've read its a deep draft this year. Should get some talent this year at the end of the first round.

I like your idea of overpaying for that first pick that fell and sacrificing the extra picks to get that player that maybe should have been a top 10 caliber player but wants over slot.

Both approaches are defensible; as you've said, it's a deep draft.

They could go 'chalk' with all 3 picks and probably do pretty well. And it would keep them more flexible in the middle rounds.

I just can't really generate much of a strong opinion either way.

Or get a more signable guy at the early draft pick and use the cash for a high risk reward who you can over pay slot on in the sandwich rounds. Royals did that for years. Got Manea that way and Wil Myers.

23. St. Louis Cardinals: SS Delvin Perez, Colegio Individualizado PJ Education School (P.R.)
Callis: Perez was in discussion for several top 10 picks before a report surfaced that he failed a pre-Draft drug test for an undisclosed PED. The Padres were in play for Perez and were looming with the next two picks, which may have been why the Cardinals moved here. Before the positive test, Perez was considered clearly the best shortstop in the draft.

33. St. Louis Cardinals: OF Dylan Carlson, Elk Grove (Calif.) HS (Compensation for John Lackey, who signed with the Cubs. Chicago forfeited its first-round pick.)
34. St. Louis Cardinals : RHP Dakota Hudson, Mississippi State (Compensation for Jason Heyward, who signed with the Cubs. Chicago forfeited its second pick.)

Anyone know anything about these guys?

from sbnation

Puerto Rican shortstop Delvin Perez was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals with the 23rd overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft on Thursday night.
Perez showed up in or near the top 10 of many mock drafts in the weeks before the draft, but his stock fell in recent days thanks to reports of a failed drug test, per Jon Heyman of Today's Knuckleball.

Plucked from the International Baseball Academy in Ceiba, Perez's strength is his defense, and he was rated in May as the seventh-best prospect in the draft by Baseball America.
"His defense is obviously there," one scout said in January, per Alyson Footer of MLB.com. "It'll take time to see how much he hits. It's the hardest thing to project, because it's the hardest thing to do. But he's where he needs to be with his speed and defense."

Perez is 6'3 and a reported 165 pounds, but he doesn't turn 17 until November, which gives him plenty of time to grow and gives him plenty of upside, especially on offense.

"He has wiry strength and could grow into some power as he matures. He already has good bat speed and has made progress refining his hitting mechanics, but his strike zone judgement and ability to recognize breaking pitches need work," wrote our own John Sickels of Minor League Ball in May. "He should hit for average but without more progress with his approach his OBP may be too low for him to make full use of his above-average running speed on the bases."
