SI had him going #9 in their mock draft

I’ve only heard pitching attached with this selection, and Hudson is the top righthanded hurler on the collegiate side in 2016 on many boards.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After all the countless hours mocking and project draft picks, the day has finally come to make draft picks official. While the major outlets have the Astros selecting Illinois pitcher Cody Sedlock. MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo has the Astros selecting Mississippi State right-handed pitcher Dakota Hudson.
May says of the pick:
While the Astros looked at many high school arms for this pick, like Anderson, it's been college pitchers who have come up more of late. The hurlers mentioned above with the Angels all could come into play with this pick as well.

Hudson, a junior, is 9-4 with a 2.62 ERA in 16 starts (16 games) with the Bulldogs in 2016. He has struck out 109 batters, walked 34, allowed 14 total extra-base hits (two total home runs) in 106 2/3 innings. He is a 2016 team captain, 2016 NCBWA Pitcher of the Year, a Baseball America second-team all-American, First Team All-SEC, and a 2016 Golden Spikes semifinalist.
Minor League Ball's John Sickels profiled Hudson:
Age 21, Hudson is listed at 6-5, 205. He throws hard, his fastball running at 93-95 MPH with peaks at 97. The pitch isn't straight; indeed, command issues with the heat held him back his first two seasons though that wasn't a problem last summer or through this March. He mixes the fastball with an unfair cutter/slider hybrid in the high-80s. The hard stuff is plus, while his softer curveball and change-up need more work. If he can develop the off-speed stuff in pro ball, he can be a dominant starter.

And Connor Jones to round out the first day.

If they can save enough money on Perez (no leverage w/ no college commitment) and Carlson (who's already said he won't be honoring his college commit and will be signing, so I expect a pre-draft deal was in place) to get Hudson and Jones signed, this draft is a friggen home run.

Jones has a LOT of Weaver in him. He's just a few months removed from being considered a possible top 10 pick and he just did not have it this year for whatever reason. Much like Weaver a couple years ago, if the Cards can get him back to the form that he showed as a sophomore, they got a very nice prospect and got him late.

Just a ton of ability in this draft. Even the Carlson pick is an exciting one to me; love seeing a guy with that kind of swing from both sides of the plate and plus power potential. Looks less likely than I thought that he will stay in the OF but does a Dmitri Young comparison do anything for you? Seems fair to me.

It looks like they had 3 out of 4 guys fall to them and 1 guy who they reached for according to the talking heads on MLB, Most thought since the cards had the extra 1st round picks that they could take the risk with the Perez guy.

17 year old from a dirt poor family takes something that could profit him millions and get his family out of poverty? I made a shitload of bad decisions at 17. It's not without risk but some mock drafts has him going #2 to the Red Sox, Worth the gamble.

Diaz got robbed big time by the ump. He has good pitch recognition from what I've noticed.

I've been watching some games lately. Diaz has been looking a helluva lot better at SS too.

And Grichuk has zero pitch recognition, he basically has to guess location or he's toast.

Completely wasn't expecting Wano as PH in that situation to actually work out.
