HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)

EDIT: Changed the original header to mark this as the thread where spoilers are allowed (but not necessarily recommended...). Created a new, spoiler-free thread for Ice and Fire virgins...

This is awesome...

Huge, Huge News

Nov. 11th, 2008 at 10:29 PM

HBO has given the production order.

They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.

It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.

It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.

More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.

Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.

I actually start to like Sansa at the end of Storm of Swords. Anybody who has read the books knows what I'm talking about.

I really hope this series has a long run. I know they're signed up for season 2.

All I know about the ratings is that the premiere did... ok. I'm curious about whether or not it's picked up viewers as the season's gone along.

The premiere did better than ok. It wasn't record-breaking and it wasn't Boardwalk Empire level, but it was still good. I haven't seen ratings for the last two weeks, but prior to that point they'd held steady at around 2.2 million watching the first show, and around 8 million total watching over the course of the week.

Actually just read up, and the May 17th episode's ratings were the highest yet, at 2.4 million.

It's very rare for ratings to actually rise for a show of this nature (fantasy/serialized), so that's I think a really, really good sign.

Excellent. I got a buddy from work into it... spreading the word, ya know. I'm paranoid. All the best shows get cancelled early. ("shows of this nature", or "anything I'm really enjoying".)

Honestly, I'd rather watch the same episode of GOT three times over than watch a new episode of Boardwalk Empire. But, I understand... it's about personal tastes.

I think it helped Boardwalk Empire that 1) it's a gangster show, which is a much easier sell than fantasy and 2) it was promoed during True Blood, which does massive numbers. Game of Thrones starts behind the 8-ball in that it's a fantasy series, which men say only women watch/read, and women say only men watch/read, and it was promoed during Mildred Pierce, which like 6 people in the entire world watched.

Just to put it into some perspective, GoT had more viewers for it's premiere than True Blood did, which means there's room for growth. Although I don't expect it will grow to anything approaching Sookie's numbers.

(Kind of a shame I think, because, while I'm a viewer/fan of True Blood, GoT blows that show completely out of the water).

I also think that Thrones has much more world-wide appeal than a show like Boardwalk Empire, meaning that HBO can probably make more money off it by selling it to foreign networks. I just hope it lasts into a third (and fourth and fifth, etc) season.

I like GOT significantly more than True Blood. Never quite gotten the appeal of True Blood (and I like vampire/werewolf flicks quite a bit).

I haven't read the books, but I'll probably do just that after season 1 is over on HBO. I'm enjoying this quite a bit, and my interest is building which is just the way I like to get into a show. Great job in episode 1 of sinking the hook in deep with the last scene with Bran.

One of the great things about the books is how your perception of characters can change as the characters themselves change through their experiences. Especially true of Sansa...and Jaime. The POV approach Martin uses lets you get in their heads a little more which also helps.

No.
I very much like the GOT series. It is one of many good offerings on HBO, but still only one.

COMPLETELY agree with you about Mildred Pierce. Wife and I tried to watch it, couldn't get through the first episode.

That shit with 'one God', death, and our only answer to him is 'not today'" is EPIC writing.

Syrio is another favorite from the books. Glad to see him translated so well on screen.

Wait just a goddamn minute now...

A Dance with Dragons is only the 2nd book he's published in this series in the last DECADE?!?!

Okay asswipe, you'd better start writing a hell of a lot faster than that. I gave up on the Dark Tower books because I got the idea that Steven King was just ****ing with me and was never going to actually finish the series. I'm not waiting until I'm 40 to see how this story ends. I'd imagine I'll be through the series by sometime in September; I better hear rumors about a release date for the next installment sometime in 2013...
