BAM. Although I wouldn't just name Roaf & Shields, that o line may have been the best in history and made Holmes & Green as good as they were. But I think Green was a more accurate passer than Cassel too.

Nothing says clutch like going 1-14 on 3rd down in the biggest game of your life.

I think two picks, especially when one is a 2nd this year, is a shitty deal for Alex Smith. You can speculate beyond that all you want

Also, if the reports are true and he hasn't been extended as part of this trade, an extension, like you said, would come on the heels of a playoff appearance which would be the result of...wait for it...solid play. I know it goes against the geno-boner, but I fail to see that being the destined outcome of ultimate doom. |

I forgot to add: If we go to the playoffs and lose the first game we play, yes, it sucks, and I have seen that movie before (several times).

Taking on his current contract AND giving up the 2nd this year is steep. Not arguing that. But, I'm going to roll with Reid/Dorsey until the wheels start coming off. They haven't lost anything yet. They know more about this shit than I ever will.

Hell, the game in the playoffs against the Colts was a great game for Trent. Was it his fault the defense could not force the Colts to punt? Was it his fault that Priest Holmes fumbled on the first drive of the 2nd half? No. So shut up with that nonsense!

A few things to consider, some good some bad -
We will need a more than adequate backup. Smith has only played 16 games twice, sometimes because of injury, sometimes because of suckage. 62 TDs vs. 32 Ints since 2009, completing over 60 percent of his passes since 2009. It's obvious the guy is coming into his own. He was super clutch in the playoffs last year. A lot of people forget that. He's mobile and smart, which I don't think Cassel was at all. He ran a 4.7 40 and got a 40 out of 50 on the Wonderlic. I'm very much in the hurry up and wait category. He's not the last QB we will acquire this offseason, so let's see who else we get and flame away then. Personally, I would LOVE to see us sign Bowe and Albert, trade back in the first, grab Millner or Austin, and use our extra pick on a QB. (Manuel, Bray, or Barkley would be fine with me) |

Alex Smith's best two seasons - 188 yards/game
Trent's best two seasons - 270 yards/game (4300 yards per season) Even Trent's "bad" first two seasons in KC were better than Smith's best (233 yards/game) Smith wishes he was Trent Green |

7. History. Time and time again we've seen the stats that 1st round QB's win Super Bowls. We have not only a 1st round QB in Alex, but the very first pick in the draft. This is what we all wanted. Not how we envisioned it, but history is now on our side
Yeah but history really shows it mostly only works for the teams that actually draft them. Not 9 years later in their careers and traded to another team. |

This is how I might feel, If I didn't live near SF, wasn't married to a 49ers fan, and hadnt watched Alex Smith fairly closely for years....
I am usually fairly reluctant to say things one way or another about players......unless I am fairly sure. I don't know anything about Geno, or any of the other players coming out except maybe Barkley....so I'm not commenting on them much. I even held off saying bad shit (as all of you know) about Cassel for like 3 years because I wanted to give him a shot. In this case, I'm pretty sure Smith isn't THAT much of an improvement. I feel confident in saying he isn't going to lead us to a ring in his 4-5 year window. I've watched his games, watched him. There is a reason the 49ers benched him to start a guy who had played one NFL game, in the middle of a playoff run season.

Green was a great QB. Anyone remember what he did for St. Louis before he got injured? He was 28-32 before Rodney Harrison injured him. Sure, it was just preseason, but that is still an amazing stat. Yes, he was a system QB. But the system DV ran was perfect for his development and skill set. I truly believe that if he hadn't gotten injured, he would have been the QB to lead the Rams to the SB during the 1999 season.
