SI: The 49ers intended to trade Kaepernick to Philly

Report: Eagles backed out of trade for Colin Kaepernick intending to draft Russell Wilson

BY BRIAN KOTLOFF

The Eagles reportedly had a trade in place to acquire Colin Kaepernick for a second-round pick last offseason.

The NFL’s top two emerging young quarterbacks apparently slipped through the Philadelphia Eagles’ grasp last offseason.

Prior to the 2012 NFL Draft, the Eagles came close to trading a second-round pick for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, but backed out of the deal thinking they could draft Russell Wilson, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The 49ers were open to trading Kaepernick because Alex Smith, who they eventually traded to the Chiefs, had led them to the NFC Championship Game in 2011.

But the Eagles’ decision backfired when the Seattle Seahawks selected Wilson with the 12th pick in the third round, forcing Philadelphia to settle for current backup Nick Foles 13 picks later.

According to the report, the Eagles had “geared their whole draft around” Wilson, who led the Seahawks to the playoffs during a spectacular rookie season in 2012.

Wilson and Kaepernick face off on Sunday Night Football this week, guiding what many consider the two best teams in the NFC.

Not sure how that is the case.

Always trying to improve your team is a smart thing. Also leaving your coach to do all the personnel, is stupid. He was overwhelmed and it ran him into the ground.

No more foolish than John Schneider and Pete Carroll gambling that the QB they wanted would be there in the third round.

And as I asked earlier, how do you know that this was Reid's decision and not Roseman's?

At least the Seahawks made a move and got Flynn and ultimately pulled the trigger on Wilson and had the balls to start him.

If this report is true, Andy Reid/Roseman not only passed on Wilson 3 times...they passed on an opportunity to trade for Colin Kaepernick...either decision would have saved andys job in Philly.

It also shows how he is always looking for an upgrade at quarterback...

Did Roseman or Andy give Vick 100m?

I'd say that whoever pushed to give Vick that much would be the one vetoing TE addition of Kaepernick/Wilson.

I bet there are a bunch of historic trades that never went down because of this reason or that reason but we just will never hear about most of them. If we do hear about them it's because someone wants to make claim they had a brilliant idea or another flop reason for excuses of sucking.

as you can see in the last year Roseman still making awful roster moves for the Eagles even after Andy is gone, so my money is on him

Trading for and giving Flynn $9 million per year was a major mistake. Giving them any praise for that move is unjustified. It was a bigger mistake than trading for Whitehurst.

Maybe, maybe not. The issue in Philly wasn't the offense but the defense.

like Russel Wilson, the Seahawks fell ass backwards into all their good players

Lynch for peanuts
Browner from the CFL by pure luck
Sherman in the 5th
Chancellor in the 5th
Bobby Wagner in the 2nd round, Eagles taking a different MLBer a pick before him lol.

forget the Eagles passing on Wilson, how about when they ****ed up on addressing the safety position and opted to go with Brandon Graham 1 pick before Earl Thomas, then taking Nate Allen in the 2nd round. Way worse.

That's why Reid is "back to coaching"

He was flat out terrible once he took over a lot of personnel control.

So Harbaugh actually believed more in Smith than Kap even though Kap was Harbs pick. Harbs: "Damn, Reid saved my ass from looking like a moron similar to Red Sox trading Babe Ruth".
