Arrowhead Naming Rights

Sorry if repost...

http://www.thekansascitychannel.com/...23/detail.html

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- KMBC has learned that the Chiefs are starting to shop around the naming rights for Arrowhead Stadium.

In the new lease deal, the Chiefs and the Royals gained control over their stadium naming rights and would get to keep all funds from any sale.

KMBC's Micheal Mahoney reported that the Chiefs appear to be in the initial stages of checking to see whether any company is interested in buying the naming rights.

The Chiefs confirmed that they have retained a company to help them look for a potential buyer.

"I would guess that both (the Chiefs and the Royals) are entertaining the possibility of naming rights," said Jim Rowland, executive director of the Jackson County Sports Authority.

Mahoney reported that the name of an NFL stadium is probably worth several million dollars a year. For example, Sprint is paying $2.5 million a year for the new downtown arena for 25 years, and the arena doesn't have a team yet.

Rowland said the teams would take the issue of naming rights seriously.

"Both teams are certainly aware of the brand identity they've developed with Arrowhead Stadium and Kaffuman stadium. And I know the Royals are certainly sensitive and protective of the Kauffman name," Rowland said.

Mahoney reported that selling the naming rights is probably not the No. 1 priority for either team -- they're both preparing for the large-scale renovations voters approved last year.

I do. But it's the way things are these days... I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner. Not many stadiums are without naming rights sponsorship deals. In fact, I liked the idea that the tradition-heavy Lambeau Field never got one either. (Not sure about Soldier Field) I read somewhere once that Lamar said he didn't want to go that route. Perhaps that's the reason why it's lasted this long without one.

I always like that us and Green Bay had not given in to this. How do they get by the Jackson County Sports Authority?

As far as Applebee's their Corporate Headquarters has or is in the process of making way to Norther Cali I believe.

They wouldn't be changing anything as much as just adding a name. Nobody would stop calling it Arrowhead.

Probably right, in that the public would keep calling it ARROWHEAD, except the media would have to refer to it by whomever bought the naming rights as part of the sponsorship deal. They could always structure the deal so that ARROWHEAD STADIUM was included as part of the sponsored name.

Change is hard. It used to grind my gears with the whole sellout thing, but the NFL sold out years ago. If anything, the Chiefs are way behind the times... big surprise.
