So glad to be home...

I'm the luckiest mother fucker on earth.

Been drinking since noon, mostly rebull-vodka, went to a buddies to watch KU game.

Driving home, realized on the highway that I got a headlight out, but have day-time-running lights that should cover me (right?)

Wrong. right before I turn into my apartment complex, a cop pulls behind me and puts on the lights. (I shove the container full of controband into my boxers)

"did you know you have a headlight out?"

"um..uh...I just...I known since the highway, was going to fix it tomorrow."

"Can I see ID and proof of insurance?"

I can't find my wallet in my pocket, so figure it must be in my little cooler pull of beer and whiskey. So, while he's shining his flashlight in my face, I reach in, clang around the empty beer bottles and find nothing. It's on the seat next to me.

"how much have you had to drink tonight?"

"um...hardly...n-n-nothing at all."

"where you coming from?"

"um...uh...watching the game at a friend's house." He takes ID and goes back to his car.

Meanwhile, I swallow the drugs in the container in my boxers, followed by some water (shit stuck in my teeth), and light up a cigarette.

He comes back. "where you headed?"

"I live right across the street, right there"

"When you gonna get that headlight fixed?"

"uh...um...first thing tomorrow, sir"

"I'm gonna give you a warning tonght. You better get right home, because I can smell some serious liquor on your breath."

"Thank you, sir"

"Have a good night."

"You are my best friend!" (yes, I actually said that)

and now I'm home to do some serious celebrating!!!!!

Had this happen to me once in college. Not only was I wasted, I was underage.

It made enough of an impression that I haven't been anywhere close to a DUI again, and I'm actually nervous if I'm driving after I've been drinking at all.

I'm not a religious guy, but I do think there's something like karma in the world. You got handed a get out of jail free card. Not sure why, but take the opportunity you've been given and learn the lesson. Odds are you won't get a second chance.

Wouldn't a DUI require you to actually be out in public?

A. The cop should have shot you with the "He was reaching for what I thought was a gun" defense and B. The people on the road with you were the lucky ones. I drove a tow truck for many years and the drunk drivers always survived the accident. The sober ones where the ones who died.

This is a bullshit attitude to be taking.

If you weren't drunk, swallowing dope and concerned about a DUI, you wouldn't have even mentioned it. You sure as hell wouldn't have been as nervous as you indicated in the threadstarter and you sure as hell wouldn't have felt "lucky" to be at home instead of Jail.

Do you think the person who got drunk and killed Milkman's Dad had killed before that "oops"?
How about the Drunk that got his brother? Think that person had done it before? Think they'd made it home FINE lots of times?

You've obviously got some growing up to do, and hopefully you'll learn BEFORE you have to learn it the hard way, and a decade from now, some smartass won't be lipping off on the internet to a family member of someone you took out.

Hope you find your cat QuickSedater.

have I killed anyone? no.

have I been close? no.

I had a close encounter with a cop that didn't see me worthy of taking to the station for the night, and felt like sharing that story with the rest of you fuckers. I felt some could relate, I didn't think I'd dredge up a bunch of painful memories and what-ifs...

Iowanian is correct. And my heart goes out to milkman and his insurmountable losses.

I lost an old girlfriend one night when she asked me to drive her home from a party, but I refused. She ended up driving herself and flipped her jeep over a few times on Metcalf. I have to live with that decision for the rest of my life, and the loss of an old girlfriend I grew up with.

That could've been you, sedated. You just don't realize it. I'm not going to be as harsh as the others 'cause the fact of the matter is- I was just like you- A LOT. And when I mean, A LOT, I mean damn near every night.

I'm not going to tell you to go get help or anything like that- just do the right thing and know that when you've had too much- don't drive! Period. There are several alternatives to driving yourself home totally intoxicated. I used to take the keys away from friends of mine who were too drunk. I'd MAKE them stay the night at our place if we had peeps over drinking. If they insisted on being home, we would then call them a cab and I'd bring them their keys the next day.

Just a few months ago, some dude lost his entire family while crossing the street in LoDo. The drunken driver ran his truck over the guy's wife, his five-year son, and his 3-year old daughter. It was a horrific scene. That poor guy has no family now because of someone else's ignorance and blatant stupidity.

You live n OPKS, so do a lot of my family and friends. Drive home drunk next time and kill one of them, and I'll make milkman look like a saint compared to the lashing I'll give you then.
