To be honest I kind of stopped paying attention to most mainstream music and started going to a lot of local shows and getting into local bands.

Friend of mine turned me onto some Throwdown the other night. Their Venon & Tears album is electric!
I've never heard of the band before, guess they've been around for awhile, but a good hard driving sound. It reminds me of a mix of Testament and Pantera. Dimebag we miss you! |

I've finally found the first metal band that entertains and interests me: Between the Buried and Me. They have enough variety within their music, moving from slower, beautiful melodies to the harsher more traditional metal, to keep me interested.
Also listening to: Lupe Fiasco Christopher Denny Stephen Malkmus Broken Social Scene Bad Religion

Vedera
As heard in recent episodes of that crappy show "The Hills". Hated to watch that show but at least they showed Vedera's poster during some scenes where their producer's assistant was conversing in her cubicle at Epic's headquarters during the last couple of episodes. Who watches that crappy show? I mean, I had to watch it to hear / see my kid but man, who'd watch it for any other reason? Maybe I'm just way too old for it. |

Great song, disappointing album. No embedding for this, sadly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHhhcKxflMY |

I'm sort of stuck in a time warp. I listen to a lot of Minor Threat, NOFX, The Casualties, etc.

Maya's visa problems were well documented. A few years ago she couldn't get back in the US because of her ties to the Tamil Tigers. Eventually they let her back -- I think
Here's the lyrics to Maya's video above: Seems like she likes to murder, and fascinated with "bombs." lol Paper Planes I fly like paper, get high like planes If you catch me at the border I got visas in my name If you come around here, I make 'em all day I get one down in a second if you wait I fly like paper, get high like planes If you catch me at the border I got visas in my name If you come around here, I make 'em all day I get one down in a second if you wait Sometimes I feel sitting on trains Every stop I get to I'm clocking that game Everyone's a winner now we're making that fame Bonafide hustler making my name Sometimes I feel sitting on trains Every stop I get to I'm clocking that game Everyone's a winner now we're making that fame Bonafide hustler making my name All I wanna do is (BANG BANG BANG BANG!) Those lyrics are inscrutable, not incendiary.

Maya's official Web site. Many people would have a difficult time finding it. You might The URL really comes up as Untitled Document. On the front page scroll down to the center and click on Jimmy -- There you will find exploding bombs and drawings depicting a terrorist training camp.

Also, as with many rap lyrics, I tend to separate the artist from the narrator, just as with poetry. Just because a speaker in a poem is espousing a particular point of view or claiming a particular lifestyle, doesn't mean that the author is speaking of him or her self. In other words, I think she's writing that lyric from the point of view of someone who hustles, doesn't give a shit about other's lives, and wants nothing but money, not that she herself participates in that or feels that way. I won't try to give some positive twist like people used to do for gangster rap and say that she's trying to raise awareness of these people and the problems, but I will say that it's will within artistic license to assume a persona when writing that is separate from one self.
