Someone IS "pushing" Matt Cassell...and it AIN'T Tyler freaking Thigpen

OK, cheap shot at Thiggy, but this is intriguing. At the very least it should serve up a huge plate of crow to ANYONE who ever bashed Croyle backers. The kid can flat PLAY. He ALWAYS had the ability.

If a miracle happens and he stays healthy...who knows?

Croyle making a move in Kansas City?

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on August 18, 2009 8:23 PM ET

Over the weekend, we almost wrote a post on Brodie Croyle appearing to pass Tyler Thigpen on Kansas City's quarterback depth chart. Ultimately, it didn't make the cut.

On Tuesday, Kansas City Star writer Kent Babb wrote that he thought Croyle was playing so well, "he's threatening [Matt] Cassel's job."

Now that's a post.

Babb's bold declaration -- on Twitter, not in the newspaper -- defies logic. Not only did the Chiefs trade for Cassel to be the starter, they handed him a huge contract only a month ago.

Seeing Cassel on the bench would be the most surprising development of a preseason in which Michael Vick became Donovan McNabb's teammate.

Then again, Chiefs coach Todd Haley didn't douse water on the notion Tuesday. Asked if Cassel has been the best quarterback in camp, Haley said: "I'll hold off on answering that."

We've read that Cassel has been inconsistent at times, but overall the reviews of his camp performance have been positive. Croyle played well in Kansas City's preseason opener, but it's hard to believe that would be enough to threaten Cassel.

It is clear, though, that Tyler Thigpen is the forgotten man in Kansas City. Babb wonders if Thigpen will even make the team.

It's also clear that Chiefs coach Todd Haley thinks his team needs some tough love after the Herm Edwards era. Asked Tuesday about Brett Favre's return, Haley turned the focus back inward.

"I'm just worried about this house. It's on fire, and I'm trying to keep it from burning down."

Your 2009 Kansas City Chiefs, ladies and gentlemen!

I think Croyle has a ton of leadership. I think Croyle has a ton of mobility.

About the only things that Croyle doesn't have are experience and durability.

Here lies the problem.... he won't get much experience if he can't last more than a half of a football game....

Some of it is just bad luck.... and bad offensive lines.

In reality, he is too tough for his own good. He will stand in the pocket in the face of a strong rush to deliver the ball. He will run for yardage and take the hits.

The guy has come back from so many injuries. He is like a boxer who just keeps getting up.... when so many of us... (Me included),by now would have just hung em' up.

I admire his resolve. I think it is unfortunate that the most talented QB in Chiefs camp right now is also the one that can't be counted on.
This ia great analogy. If he had the physical make up to be a starter he would be great. His arm is a cannon with a quick release and he can survey the field but his body can't take any punishment.

Heck, I'm a really small guy. I weighed 121lbs when I graduated high school. Two years later, I weighed 171 because I worked very hard in the gym.

Hell, I could gain more muscle mass if I were a professional athlete. And, I'm not doing anything exotic with supplements.

I understand he's in an NFL conditioning program and perhaps he's just a rather thin guy who's already maxed out his body, but if I were him, I'd be juiced to the gills with HgH. Its on the banned substance list, but they don't test for it. Of course, I wouldn't use mega doses because that can be very bad if you have unknown tumors: in that case, HgH stimulates tumor growth.

correct. He can have all the talent in the world but if he can't stay on the field, why does it matter? You can't count on the guy. An a NFL QB, a successful QB must be able to be counted on, be consistent.

When you say you never heard of those people, are you saying you didn't see anyone else who would have preferred a different GM hire (like myself and OnTheWarpath), or that you never heard of Eric Decosta or George KoKinus?

Kent Babb is freaking clueless.

Listening to him on 810 and he can't tell you anything even after being at camp all this time. He just dogs on everyone Teicher style as a way of hiding his complete lack of insight.

Could the star hire more miserable bastards?

I'm watching this season with low expectations. Scott Pioli and crew are taking over a very, very bad team and it's gonna take time to rebuild and get the Herm Edwards stank off. Anyone who thinks otherwise is setting themselves up for heartache.

Thoughts on this thread:
1. I'd love to see Brodie make #2 on the depth chart
2. Our QBs are throwing to a patch work WR corp, neither is going to look good

Everyone's mind set right now should be "future" and "re-build".

With good conditioning and a decent OL he might be ok. Herm had a history of QB injuries, I'd lay some of the blame on him.

I agree, and I am one of the guys that stood by Brodie last season.

But, I am not going to get too excited, until he shows he can get back up, after being clobbered by a couple guys getting revenge for Brady.

Sure, lets start the season with Croyle. Then Cassel can finish the season during the 2nd quarter of that 1st game.

It would be KC's luck for Croyle to turn into Rich Gannon with a live arm.
