John Mayer - Freak Stalker, Got Serious Game or Hung like a Grizzly?

I mean, wtf?

Is this guy a serial stalker of hot, famous chicks?

I'm still a little blown away that he was apparently dating Taylor Swift.

How does a guy that's apparently tried to nail any chick who's been on this months cover of National Enquirer land a chick like Taylor Swift. And then there is celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jennifer Anniston, Minka Kelly, Jessica Simpson, and now Katy Perry. Is there no one safe from this scrawny douche?

Seriously though...what gives?

I don't get it.

I love the Foo Fighters. Dave is a great dude. Dave is a great songwriter.

But in terms of guitar playing and stylists, Dave is just a guy.

That said, he's my favorite rock drummer around.

Clapton, for instance, hasn't been "great" since Cream. Everything he's done since, guitar wise, has been generic and lame. He's barely written a hit single and has employed songwriters for decades on end.

Jimi Hendrix pretty much copied Buddy Guy, from tone to guitar to style, so putting him "above" anyone is moot. Actually, rating guitarists is silly, period, because you may have a connection with someone that is shrill to me (and vice versa). Hendrix' biggest contribution was his songwriting, lyrics and theatrics.

Back on topic, the pioneers of blues guitar, Freddie, Albert and B.B. King, along with Albert Collins, had their own "sound" and style but what set them apart from everyone else that could play exactly like they could play, was that they sang AND wrote appealing songs.

There a tens of millions of people that aren't any where near "famous" that can "copy" the sound and styles of those guys and countless others. But that doesn't make those cover guitarists "great" anymore than it makes a drummer like Dave Grhol a "great" guitarist.
I couldn't possibly agree more about Clapton, he hasn't been relevant since forever, remember the old "Clapton is God" thing from his heyday, hell he wasn't even top 5 in his own day imo.

Also agreed on players who actually compose their own material instead of just being great playing what someone else wrote... i disagree a bit about the relevance of Hendrix though, to be honest i haven't heard much Buddy Guy, but i have to think he was making sounds with his guitar that Guy couldn't dream of.

Actually, i just last night finished the most mind blowing documentary i've ever watched on any subject, its about 10 hours long called "All You Need Is Love" from the mid 70's, just simply amazing.

It had a ton of rare Jimi footage and it reeeally rekindled my interest in Jimi, the man was literally from another planet, it made me wanna go back and re-read a great book i've had for 15 years called "Electric Gypsy"... anyway, for those thast haven't seen this doc, i cannot recommend it more highly... Ken Burns has nothing on this guy.

Where Hendrix really shined was as a music visionary, songwriter and producer. While he could make "sounds", he wasn't the greatest technician (ala a Vai, Johnson, Van Halen, Zappa, etc.) but he channeled himself through his music.

As a musical visionary, there are few equals.

A true pioneer and technician IMO was Randy Rhodes. In today's music i think Tosin Abasi takes the cake. Best guitar technician i have ever heard ever. He plays an 8 string but is still ****ing great. Check out Animals as Leaders "CAFO" on youtube to see what i mean.

Rhodes set the bar though with his play.

Trucks is obviously good and Paisley was surprisingly good. Not so big on the others.

Really did like the Paisley version though, especially when he sped it up almost into a Rockabilly tune.

I saw Buddy live in his club in Chicago back in '96. We walk in, it was early, and I look down the bar and it's ****ing Buddy Guy sitting by himself drinking whiskey. Cool as shit.

We sit down, have some drinks, don't bother the man, because, well, he's the man and proceed to listen to the two bands that night.

The opening band had a really funky bass player that really stood out. Can't remember who he was though.

The singer for the second band started in on trying to get Buddy to join them almost immediately and it was like watching a Ping-Pong contest having the guy bug Buddy and then turning to watch Buddy tell him "no."

By the fourth song, the band launched into "Mustang Sally" and Buddy had enough of the badgering. He walked on stage, picked up a guitar and proceeded to play, for about 15 minutes, the most mind-blowing guitar work I've ever heard before or since. At one point, he was playing so delicately that you could have heard a pin drop. Just insanity sauce.

He puts the guitar down, the entire crowd stands up and walks out with Buddy going back to his seat at the bar leaving the band to play to an empty house. Fabulous shit.

Quote:
Eric Clapton said "Buddy Guy was to me what Elvis was for others." Clapton said in a 1985 Musician magazine article that "Buddy Guy is by far and without a doubt the best guitar player alive...if you see him in person, the way he plays is beyond anyone. Total freedom of spirit, I guess. He really changed the course of rock and roll blues."
Quote:
Jimi Hendrix himself once said that "Heaven is lying at Buddy Guy’s feet while listening to him play guitar."

****ing Buddy Guy...man, I've been listening to him all day. Had him playing at work and was so into it I nearly missed putting out my shit.

And since this is a John Mayer based thread, I guess I'll have to do this this way...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhU1JFVhMQE

And Dane's correct...see who's watching and playing with Buddy in this one...

Rumor has it that Jimi used to take a Super 8 to Buddy's gigs to film and then subsequently study his finger work.

The problem with Mayer is that he's too preoccupied banging chicks to be taken seriously as a blues guitar god by the masses. He'll never be Stevie Ray even though the guy is talented.

This is the guy that saves the blues, the new king:

Gary Clark, jr. is very, very good. But his voice isn't that distinctive and he'll need to write a few signature songs before he crosses over into the mainstream.

BTW, I've always loved this old Albert Collins song.
