Baldinger Breaks Down the Chiefs D

https://twitter.com/BaldyNFL?ref_src...Ctwgr%5Eauthor

Basically, every facet sucks. The DL is getting blocked and can't get off blocks, the LB's aren't communicating, the DB's aren't communicating and tackling. More of an execution issue than play calling.

What other player on this team is giving up his body - laying it all on the line? None!
Well - I get your point, BUT if you paid me $17 MILLION, I'd sure as hell try to do that!

This D has more talent now than Alex's first year and our D is performing worse.

We're doing what protects us most and not what plays to our strengths.

In fact Philly could be looked at as our mirror image. Their DB's suck, they have a good D line, their LB's are disciplined and gang tackle, and they are a pass-heavy offense with almost no running game with a 2nd year QB.

They hide their defects by concentrating on their strengths.

We act like we don't even know what our strengths are...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

The biggest thing hurting this team right now is the pass rush. Teams are doubling Houston a ton and leaving everyone else 1v1 and that results in no pass rush.

The same exact thing is happening to Khalil Mack and Von Miller which is why they haven't had good years either.

Look at the Chargers. Their defense is so good bc their pass rush duo of Ingram/Bosa changes everything.

The secondary would look significantly better if the QB didn't have 5+ seconds to throw.

And no pressure from our defensive line.

Nearly all the problems this team has seems to stem from poor coaching. If both the offensive and defensive lines are not performing properly then it is on the coaches. If the DBs aren't tackling or being put in coverages they can't physically do, then that is on the coaching too. Andy has always been known as a "players coach", but maybe his approach has gotten too lax for the team's own good.

I actually think our biggest issue is coverage right now. QBs are able to hit wide open receivers within 2 seconds almost every pass play. I don't know if it's a communication, scheme, or talent issue... but it's the main problem.

Man, this whole thing made me just shake my head. Why our D-backs play six yards off the line of scrimmage on 3rd and 4 is beyond me. That's why we can't stop a slant pass ever.

We've done that dumb shit for a while now under Sutton.

This is a major product of missing EB.with EB locking down a TE 1v1, it was essentially 6 defenders vs 3 receivers in zone coverage due to 1 OLB dropping back.

Without EB, we have to double TE's making it 6v4 and dropping more guys to help adjust.

Chris Jones got some nice pressure last weekend. But that's not the problem.

You know what the best pass rushing teams have? Talent everywhere. Look at them:

Broncos 2015-Malik Jackson, Derek Wolfe, Von, Ware...Shane Ray and Shaq Barrett off the bench.
Jags 2017-Malik Jackson, Calais Campbell, Dante Fowler, Yannick Ngakoue, Duane Smoot, Marcel Dareus.
Texans 2016-JJ Watt, Jadeveon Clowney, Whitney Mercilus.
Eagles 2017-Brandon Graham, Fletcher Cox, Timmy Jernigan, Vinny Curry...Derek Barnett and Chris Long off the bench.

Our best defensive game was vs the Eagles when Houston went off, Chris Jones had a career game, Dee Ford was playing great and Allen Bailey had a nice game.

The Chiefs have got to make it a priority to bolster the pass rush in the offseason. Get as many good players as you can find and rotate then.

KC's problems right now go way deeper than just Alex Smith. I think its laughable some people are speculating that the D is tanking because they want Mahomes. Smith came out on fire and was an MVP candidate for the first 5 games and people think the D was playing poorly because they wanted him gone? They are putting their jobs on the line, and for some players possibly their last season in the NFL, for some rookie who was never given a chance to start and who gets 3 snaps in practice per week?
If the 3 snaps a week is true, that is irresponsible knowing he is one hit away from being in there.
