What does Frank Oz have a goddamned thing to do with real actors dueling? OF COURSE they were going to ****ing CGI Yoda. THE POINT IS/WAS: I appreciate the fights that are done with actors more than a doctored-up, CGI splooge-fest.
Jesus...

Both scenes featured actors that had spent months choreographing their moves and scene. And to the point I made earlier, Yoda is a CGI character, so it only stands to reason that his battle scenes with Tyranus and Sidious would be VFX. And for the record, the scene with Vader and Obi-Wan in Episode 4 is as hilariously bad in 2013 as it was in 1977. |

Lucas, IMO, listened too much to the public, too much to internet chatter and so forth. If he had just stuck to his vision from TPM on, the prequel would garner more respect amongst older fans than it does today. |

I'm gonna have to agree with Dane. I've always liked Phantom Menace, except a bit too much Jar Jar. AoTC is kinda blah....RoTS was decent as well.
Lucas screwed the pooch with casting choices of Anakin. Both actors were bad. Posted via Mobile Device |

The enchantment related to the the Phantom Menace duel can be compared to staring at a steaming pile of shit for an hour and a half and then suddenly seeing a fly land on it.
The fly was exciting for a moment so you forgot you were still staring at a pile of shit for the past hour and a half. |

AOTC is just terrible. It's easily the worst of the prequels. From the shitty acting of HC, to Obi-Wan's mullett, to the awkward scenes between HC and Portman...just terrible.

The scenes with Obi Wan and Jango on Kamino are cool, as are the light saber battles at the end of the film. The rest is complete garbage. The scenes and look of Geonosis is laughable. I've seen better stop-motion from Ray Harryhausen that's more realistic looking than those created by ILM for the arena scenes in AOTC. |

The arena scenes are awful, but TPM as a whole is just a horrendous movie. Stilted pace, boring dialogue, terrible acting and direction, annoying child lead, the list goes on and on.
The only redeeming parts of that entire trilogy are a few lightsaber battles. There isn't quarter of a good movie between the three of them if you take all the best parts and combine them. |

If you're talking about the pod races, that was nothing but pure surround sound porn. Nobody cared what was going on, just that things were whizzing and whirring all around them, or so Lucasfilms hoped.

The movie did have a few things working for it, the casting (outside of Jake Lloyd, seriously, how could Lucas absolutely botch the two most important castings of the prequel trilogy?), the construction of Palpatine's character, and the lightsaber duel at the end, of course. I think the central problem of the trilogy is that the excesses of Lucas' ideas were on full display throughout their entirety. Lucas has always had ideas that were on the loopy side, for example, Luke and his aunt and uncle were originally intended to be dwarfs, Han was supposed to be green creature who didn't have a nose, and 3PO was supposed to be a dirty "used car salesman" (remind you of anyone from the prequel trilogy?) It's pretty telling that the Empire Strikes Back, now widely credited with being the best film in the series, had the least influence from Lucas out of any Star Wars film (Though, to be fair, it originally had a "ride off in the sunset" type of ending.) You could argue that Lucas' over-control was first seen in Return of the Jedi, as the director and Harrison Ford wanted Han killed in the first 20 minutes (to demonstrate to the audience that nobody was safe), and the Ewoks were supposed to be rather ugly, lizard like creatures who were misunderstood by the rest of the galaxy, Lucas nixed both of those plot points. The Prequel Trilogy was doomed from the moment Lucas decided to surround himself with a group of "yes men" who in no way would trim the excesses from his product. I also have neglected Lucas' shortcomings as a writer, Harrison Ford swayed Lucas to change many of his lines in the first two movies, and I also believe that Hayden Christianson's acting was horrifically stunted due to the Lucas' writing (Shattered Glass proves that Christianson does possess rather impressive range as an actor). When Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman are delivering wooden lines, it's evident the problem strays beyond the actors. TL;DR: Lucas has always been a bit loopy, The Prequel Trilogy just put this reality on full display. Last edited by Chiefspants; 07-05-2013 at 05:20 PM.. |

The political climate of the 2000's didn't help Lucas' story matter much either.

When you start the ball rolling with a trade dispute as the basis of your "major conflict" in the SW galaxy.....
yeah.

It's worth noting that I primarily relied on these two sources for information.
