How about we field a complete team that shows up for the entire season instead of just half a season. First half of the season we had a shit offense and what appeared to be a top notch defense. As soon as we started facing teams that had a QB our defense became less than average and our offense finally woke up. But.... the second half of the season we lost 6 games.

Playing a weak plethora of QBs the first half of the season is what this team crowns its ass on.

The first step in building that complete team is picking a QB and building around him. Andy Reid chose Alex Smith. Dorsey agreed to give up two 2nd round picks for him. For his first year in a new system with a complete average OL and below average WRs/TE's he played fairly well. The only plan that makes sense is to build around Smith.

I want to play out his contract and see how he looks after the first half of this season. We don't need to extend him right now. If he picks up right where he left off then by all means, show him the money.

There it is.

If we're going to get stuck paying him 16 mil + we might as well get a 2 year audition from him.

If you think his numbers will be better playing the Seahawks, 49ers, Broncos, Pats, Jets, and Steelers behind this O line you're crazy. Waiting a year might save us millions...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Saving the team money is only a valid argument when trying to explain away the team's lack of activity in free agency...

The Cowboys won't win anything until after Romo is gone. He is a choker. He can't even get his team to the playoffs.

There will always be a team that wants to overpay for a QB. When his numbers drop everyone is going to say "that's what happens when you ignore your biggest needs in FA and the draft." I'm not sure it's really going to cause his price tag to fall.

Putting aside the cap manipulation that's possible with a big signing bonus, if dude really wants $16-$18mil a season we can not only keep him this year, but the next two for roughly the same amount by franchising him. If there's something that prevents this in the language of his agreement then you give more consideration to the long-term deal, but as I see it, if we really love Alex Smith enough to give him that kind of deal we should just let him play a couple years on his current contract then franchise him. The real dollars seem to be almost the same since, in the franchising scenario, he doesn't get a big raise this year.

His contract expires at the end of this season.

Romo, Cutler, and Alex Smith all same level of suck just they come in different packages. You aren't winning the big one with any of them.

Why can't we win it all with Alex Smith?

I'm not saying we can or can't, I'd just like to hear some legitimate reasons why we can't.

His arm doesn't limit his game
He isn't careless with the ball
He has shown he can be a playmaker and not just a game manager
He's pretty good under pressure
His mobility isn't a detriment, in fact it's a strength
He is smart

I guess I saw a guy that really grew into a playmaking role by the end of last season and I'm not sure what legit reasons there are at this point to say "we can't win it all with Alex Smith"

But I could be wrong...I'd like to hear the argument.

I agree. It would likely be in the team's best interest to wait. It is a gamble though. If he's lights out, with a sub par receiving core, his value will skyrocket...and he'll have more leverage.

Unless he isn't asking for 18m. Then I think you take it.
