If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.
A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.
So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way. This all comes down to will a rookie become better than between 10th and 20th best in the league. I don't think so. Alex Smith, I believe, is the best QB on a new team, rookie or vet.

He has shown he can be a bottom 1/3 QB, but he's never shown he can be that top 10 franchise QB at even a Trent Green level so at 29 I'm not expecting him to all of a sudden turn into something else. |

I still don't understand the whole "homegrown" thing. It makes absolutely no difference if you win with a homegrown QB or you win with one you get from someone else. The only thing that matters is if you win. Is it an ego thing?

It just an odds thing. Nobody is opposed to signing Brees or Warner as a FA. You're odds are just better for long term success to get your guy in the draft.

I think it's a misreading of odds thing. It's a "what should I do if I have absolutely no confidence in my ability to assess QB skills" thing. If you have confidence in your ability to recognize talent, you take your QB from wherever you find him. You may end up finding him more often in the draft than available through trade or in free agency, but to make a decision based on where you find a QB instead of which QB has the talent is backward.

I think the "homegrown" thing is a hometown pride thing. But I left my hometown of KC 29 years ago, so I feel no need to have pride in KC. I'm loyal to the team, not the city. I want to win, I don't need to win with a homegrown QB. |

If he has a cute little safe season and the Chiefs win, I'd think he'd get one. If he goes 3000 yds, 17 TDs and 6 INTs, and the Chiefs go 6-10 or 7-9, I don't think he's getting that extension.

I don't know what BigCatDaddy's answer is, but for many of these guys, it doesn't matter who it is as long as he's taken in the first round. It could have been Tyler Bray if he had been taken with the right pick, but alas, we got him for free so now he's an incredible long shot.
